Vista not recognizing DVD drive

I run Windows Vista, a 4600+ (200mhz OC), 2GB of DDR2, an XFX motherboard (no longer supported by XFX) and just bought a Samsung DVD burner.

The problem is that even though the DVD burner shows up in the BIOS ( its SATA btw), it doesnt show up in My Computer. I bought a new burner because the old one, a LITE-ON, started having problems burning DVDs and then wasnt recognized altogether in My Computer. I thought if I got a new drive the problem would fix itself. Low and behold, the new drive still doesnt show up in Windows.

Ive tried changing cables and SATA slots and it always ends up the same. Ive also checked the drive manager and stuff and Windows just doesnt see the drive. I dont think its a power supply problem, everything else in my computer works.

Help is much appreciated. not having a cd drive is very hindering.

Do you have any other sata drives (hard drives). If not you may need to install a sata driver for you mobo. also make sure that the sata options on your mobo are turned on.

Yeah, my main C drive is SATA. I checked that link you gave me, dclive, but I its not that it wont show up after I do soemthing. It just doesnt show up in the first place. Also, I dont run XP. Dont wanna risk messing with registry if I dont know it will fix the problem.

I was thinking, www.driveragent.com says I'm using the correct driver, but the driver it shows me having for the CD/DVD drives are

DVD/CD-ROM drives
TSSTcorp CDDVDW SH-S203B SCSI CdRom Device
GL9354T ALK607B SCSI CdRom Device

Does that tell anybody anything?

Thanks again.

Did you look at what your CDROM filter driver was, if you had one? Post the contents of that registry value's upperfilters and lowerfilters so we can see what it is.

The registry is nothing to fool with. I notice MS has a Help File for this problem. If I were you I'd download the file in my link, and go from there.

Good Luck!

I'm having the same sort of problem.. drive shows up in bios and in vista, but it will either read files verrryyy slowly, or just freeze
the window all together.

I thought it was the drive dieing but if this is a common problem then hmm!

ok...so I tried going into regedit again and found the LowerFilters file, but not the UpperFilters file. Should I go ahead and delete the LowerFilters file anyways?

Also, I just want to specify that this new drive didnt show up at all in Vista. The help page says that it dissapears after using a CD or DVD recording program. The only one I've used it windows DVD maker.

Don't delete the key on the left, just the text on the right. Write down what you change, and then remove it, reboot, and see if the issue goes away. If not, put the change back.

I had the same problem with a Samsung SATA burner, too many problems on multiple systems, sent it back to the egg and got an ASUS one. No probs since.
