Definitely Vista. I don't know if you are allowed to install it on two partitions at the same time, but I have an X64 partition and an X86 partition, since there is still some new software and some old software that won't run on a 64 bit OS. That is changing rapidly, but Macdrive for exanple, just released a 64 bit version last month. For most people though, you will never find anything you need that won't run on X64. Either way, definitely go Vista.

Wow...........I'm a little surprised at the overwhelming support for Vista, but I've at least gotta throw in *my* support for XP.

XP!

XP!

Out of curiosity, could you elaborate for the OP why XP should be his choice over Vista. It would give the thread a little more balance and there can be good reasons for choosing XP over Vista.

Both SKUs you linked are oem(tied to mb). I don't know what the extra letters are in the desc., but either will work for you.

You can buy an 'Upgrade' edition of Vista or XP and still do a clean fresh install from it. It is a little bit of an annoyance to do it with Vista, but it can be done. In that case for Vista you have to own a license to W2K or WXP that you're upgrading "from" but you don't actually have to perform the in place upgrade on an installation of XP on the hard drive, you just have to own the license for it even if the PC is clean installed.

If you buy an OEM / DSP version of Vista it will not be expected that you replace the entire computer and use the same OS license on your next computer. You can replace / repair any parts of the computer and doing so may trigger re-activation of your license, but it is OK to do.

For cost savings the Upgrade version is usually best if you want to have the option to replace the PC and keep using the OS on another PC, or you wish to be able to keep the PC and sell / give away the previously used OS .

I have decided on this version of Vista.

If I have to RMA my motherboard in the future *hopefully not* would I still have to call Microsoft or would it just reinstall ? Since it is tied to the motherboard although the motherboards would be identical.

Just reinstall.

You have a certain number of attempts. If the licence protection software gets kicked off, it's s toll free, 2 minute phone call to get another key.
