Vista Serach

One of the reasons why I love Vista is the search function - click on the orb, type and it's there.

I am terrible in organising my emails, so I often have to search for one to find a bit of info. Now, when I do this in Vista, it finds the mails and displays them in the "start menu". Problem is, clicking on it, does nothing. Double clicking, ditto. Right clicking and selecting Open also does nothing.

So how do I open these mails which I find using search?

Works fine for me using Outlook 2007. What email client are you using? I agree -- having contextual search for emails is essential and immensely helpful.

Have you set your default mail handler under "set program defaults" or whatnot?

You can also make sure that the default program for opening email is WindowsMail. Check that in File Associations. Search just opens in whatever is designated for that type of file.

Im using Outlook 2003 and I have set it to all defaults in the default programs. Still doesn't open the search result mail tthough...any idea why?

I have exactly the same problem in Vista with Eudora Pro. It will not download email. SO - I use WinMail now for everything.

I'm guessing that perhaps WinMail needs to be disabled.

That is not what I was referring to by file association. That is not done by setting those "choices," but by setting File Associations in Folder Options in Control Panel.

I've just diabled access to Windows Mail, nothing. I have also checked the file associations, and all the messages are correctly linked to Outlook. It still doesn't work though.

I can't use Windows Mail since I get my mail from a company exchange server.

There are ways to get Windows Mail working with Exchange servers, depending on the server's configuration, by using IMAP.

I think Vista's Search is limited to Windows Mail (and Outlook 2007), at least currently. However, it can be modified with iFilters and Protocol Handlers, and I am aware of Thunderbird's effort at this point:

Bummer. I actually have Office 2007 as well, but I am using 2003 since I found 2007 to be slow and laggy doing certain things (opening excel files for one - I made a thread about this some time ago).

Office 2007 isn't slower or more laggy than Office 2003 on any half decen system. The problem you are likely having with Excel has an easy fix, I believe do in part to Adobe Acrobat Reader. My dad had an issue where Excel files took over a minute to open, if you tried opening the file directly. I believe when he removed Adobe Reader, it solved the problem, and was fixed in a new build of Adobe Reader.

Well, Vista only supporting WinMail or Outlook 07 would totally explain it. This is a limitation I wasn't aware of.

And yeah, I find office 07 to be MUCH snappier than 03 in many areas. I use Foxit reader, so I've managed to avoid any adobe associated issues. I don't use Excel much, so I haven't noticed slow file opening. But in terms of Outlook, 03 had a tendency to choke up or begin to get unresponsive at times while 07 seems much more stable and responsive even while background things are going on. I was actually very impressed when I upgraded to 07 at the improvements made specifically to Outlook.

Possibly, can you tell me what the Adobe Reader problem was? I had to add "%1" in the CLI arguments to get a slight improvement, but as documented on the newsgroups this fix seems to "expire" after a while. My notebook is C2D 2.00Ghz, with 2GB RAM so I don't think it was the a case of a underspecced system. I also found some very strange lags in Outlook 2007 when I was connected to the work server via VPN and trying to write a new email - it would take over a minute for it to open.

I wasn't aware of it, either, but I did an hour or two of research before replying. I did find an iFilter for alternative email clients for the search, but currently it only works for older versions of Windows Desktop Search. There is material out there about how iFilters and Protocol Handlers work, there is a blog and a forum at MSDN, as well as an iFilter site or two.
