VLC player vs. WMP 12

I have both open with an episode of TNG, and they have the same commit size. VLC opened marginally faster, but not enough to matter. Opening an mp3 with each has VLC noticeably faster.

I tried the new VLC 1.1 build last night, the one where GPU acceleration is supposedly working. Didn't work well for me. I tried that 23-second-long 109MB torture clip from BBC's Planet Earth (with the huge flock of birds) and the bitrate goes up to about 42 Mbps.

I have a Radeon 5850 and an i7 750 (currently at 3GHz even). CPU usage was ~30&#37; but lots of dropped frames and stutters. 61 dropped frames doesn't fully indicate how choppy it felt. Playing back the same file on WMP12 results in <5% CPU usage with perfect playback.

Edit: As for memory usage, well not much of a contest with WMP12 doubling VLC's commit size. But they both launch equally quick. Less than second from double-click to file playing.

I use WMC for TV and movies. VLC is used for music and videos.

vlc for music over wmp due to better sound quality ?

Ok, I admit it, it's kinda fun to see old threads revived. I prefer WMP. I know where the options are, it works well. There is something to be said for spending only a couple seconds adjusting, and then enjoying the video.

However, some codecs do not seem to play correctly on WMP for me. VLC is my alternative for this.

Also, I will mention that Divx Player has been quite buggy for me lately. I install it for the codec, not the player.
