Anyone remember this card? Is it incompatible with the current agp standard? no I dont wanna use one lol but I wanna put it in an older computer and before I try anything wanan know if its compatible with agp 8 since wasnt it agp 2 or 4? I noticed the slots are the same size but the agp8 has a little bar in the middle while the banshee dont have the spot for the bar so I guess its not compataible but what version of agp was it?

AGP slots are backward compatible with older AGP cards like the Voodoo Banshee. The Banshee was probably a 2X AGP card when it was released. They really weren't a bad 2D/3D solution back in the day. There is no reason why you can't plug a Voodoo Banshee card into any AGP slot on any motherboard and use it, even on a new AGP P4 or Athlon 64 system.

My mother-in-law has my old K6-2 450 system with a Voodoo Banshee video card in it. She never powers it up or runs software or anything, but it still looks good sitting on her desk.

Finding drivers will be an issue, and the Voodoo Banshee will not be able to run too many modern DX8 or DX9 games at all.

Good luck.

Do not use a Voodoo Banshee on a new motherboard - it can fry both the card and the motherboard!!! Do not listen to crazyeddie!!!!!

AGP 2X and 1X cards use 3.3V signalling, while current AGP 4X and 8X slots only work at 1.5V/0.8V . This is why any AGP 8X card works fine in a 4X or 8X slot, but not AGP 2X cards.

Here's a list of which 3dfx cards are current in today's motherboard. It turns out only the Voodoo 4 4500 works in today's motherboards, and drivers would be scarce.

Throw away the Banshee! They weren't even good back then.

really? they have Banshee in AGP? I thought they were all PCI. I remember they were like modified voodoo2 chips with added 2D accelerator in the cost of some 3D performance.

it was only missing a TMU IIRC from the original Voodoo2.

Hence the use of "autodetection" by the motherboard's chipset and bios, much like CPU and DIMM settings are autodetected. I'm going to cram a Voodoo Banshee card onto a socket 939 AGP motherboard just to prove it works!

Just out of curiosity, why would a Voodoo 4 4500 still work on modern boards but a Voodoo 5 5500 AGP card wouldn't?

Actually although they sat on an AGP slot, there was some deal about how they weren't technically AGP 2X cards.

There is no "autodetection". The slot is a 1.5V/.8V ONLY. It isn't backwards compatible any further.

I guess we wont be hearing from you since doing that would fry your computer thereby not allowing you to post.

Please, go ahead. Make sure that you have a video camera rolling, I expect that the result will be much the same as the TH vids with the burning CPUs with no heatsinks. (Unless you specifically pick out a S939 mobo that has an "AGP voltage protection" feature, in which case the challenge really doesn't count, because you've chosen to stack the deck.

I didn't think that they were "true" AGP cards at all, much like the V3, they just used the connector, but ran in PCI mode. (Much like those same "AGR" - AGP Riser slots on those hybrid i915 mobos that sport both PCI-E x16 and AGP ("AGR") slots.)
