I had someone create a computer from scratch and currently I am having trouble with the sound. I have PowerDVD hardware and software installed but when I go to play a DVD the volume is really low. I put it on loud and all the other volume controls are on high. When I play itunes the volume is louder but still not normal. My mother board is a K7 model number M825G. Any suggestions to increase the volume of the audio on my computer?

Assuming that you have the PowerDVD volume on high, the windows master volume on high, and the wave volume (double the volume icon on your task bar on high), then I'd suggest enabling laptop mode in PowerDVD. Going into configuration, click the audio tab, then advanced, then click the Dynamic Range Compression to "Noisy Environment." Works great for me, but then this is on a laptop. Not having a laptop, I would just turn the speakers up if possible, but maybe this will help you anyways.

I basically had the same problem when I set up my first rig with the audio being so low. I found out that I had plugged in the audio wires from the case incorrectly to the mobo. Check and make sure the wires are plugged in where they suppose to be and go from there. Good luck.

Ding ding! Winner!

The effect you are experiencing is thanks to the wonders of Dolby sound. When your volume is "properly" adjusted, whispers are nearly inaudible, and gunshots are so loud that it sounds like someone's firing an armor-piercing 50 calibur rifle right next to your head.
First time I heard it was with The Matrix, my first DVD. I was very close to never purchasing another DVD ever again. If I want it to sound like a gun is going off in my livingroom, I'll buy one and use it. I hate it that set-top DVD players don't seem to have the dynamic range compression feature.

Not that it's too likely, but at work when people tell me they have low volume, I always tell them to make sure their headphones are unplugged from the computer. This assumes you have speakers that mute when headphones are plugged in though.

That's the reason they usually put a stereo track on DVD's still. Sounds like you don't have surround sound and are playing back a surround sound track.

My set top DVD player has dynamic range compression. Of course its a Pioneer Elite player and cost 1200 bucks way back but Im sure some players still have this.

I'm having the same problem on my travelmate 8200. Its not just powerDVD though, WMP does it too. i just cannot get DVD audio as loud as i would like it. I do have dynamic range compression enabled, and yes it helped, but it still doesn't seem loud enough. Mabye i'm just used to the bottom part of my sig...

My cheap Sony home theater system (in which the DVD player doesn't play most DVD's any more) has the same thing...they call it night mode...very handy living in a condo with downstairs neighbors with a baby.

Did you (or your friend that built the rig) check out the audio wiring to the mobo yet? All the symptoms sounds exactly what I went through with my rig the first time around.

No, it still happens on the stereo track, assuming there is one - and even on some VHS tapes.

hmm that is odd. I know on my audigy 2 ZS they have dynamic range compression and they also have it in WinDVD7. I turn it off usually and just use the one on my receiver if needed. Otherwise, I just let the explosions blow me away.
