Question Volume leveling

I am running linux mint and i Have Sound Blaster X-Fi Titanium Fatal1ty sound card. Some movies i watch have very loud sound effects and not so loud speech, which is very annoying. I remember from my windows days that my sound card can "equalize" the volume but i seem to be unable to install the windows application for controlling of my sound blaster card and not able to find the linux equivalent. Can any one suggest what i need to do?

You are probably thinking of "dynamic range compression". For what i can find you can use pulseeffects or this to achieve it (do note i have no experience using both of them).
