SwedeSpeed is now open!

I have the best Volvo of all, of course. I have the one year only 1982 200 series GLE! Straight Six will beat your puny GLs and DLs off the line! I've always had a special place in my heart for the 240 Turbo. Especially in silver trim...damn nice car!!

VOLVO RULES! I want a Volvo 850 to go along side my next car...a Volkswagen Corrado!

BOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!

90% of Volvo drivers do 45MPH in the passing lane. They usually are gabbin on their cell phones and not paying attention to the road. I hate Volvo driver with a passion. It's fuuny no other vehicle besides a Volvo seem to want to cause me bodily harm. Just last month, some idiot ina 240 signaled left, swerved right and nearly hit me. He the rear ended another car. I was glad to be a witness to that one. Another time a Volvo rear ended my truck and just took off. I chased the a$$hole down and he claimed he didn't know he made contact. Phucker.

Did I mention I hatre Volvos?

Volvo = Vehicle Of Low Velocity Owners

i used to have an 86 740 gle...that thing was great, it took any beating i could give it and kept right on going. i swear it saved me at least 10 tickets on highway driving, doing like 90-95, i think cops just looked down at their radar gun and were like 'huh?? its a damn volvo!' i miss that car at times. i really miss rear wheel drive esp, and the ability to cram 12 people into it when i needed to

First car I remember: 1986 Volvo 245 DL (Station wagon version of the 240 series). Absolutely wonderful car except the AC was terrible, but what do they need AC for in Sweden anyway?
Supergrove: The 260 series (200 series Volvo's w/ the straight 6) wer around for more than one year, they existed at the inception of the two series in the '70s until the early '80s. Of note, the straight 6 was not built by Volvo, rather by Renault who had a joint development contract with Volvo for that engine and both companies used it, though only Reanult built it. The six is reputed to be a great deal less reliable than the Volvo-built four, which, as my mechanic once said in a bit of hyperbole, "could take a sledge hammer to the block and still keep running".
Personally, I want an older Volvo PV1800 or an older still PV444. BTW, little known fact; "Volvo" is latin (or something) for "I Roll", and was chosen for the name of the car line because the parent company originally made ball-bearings.

1989 Volvo 760 Turbo wagon. People at my school laughed when I drove into the parking lot, but they weren't laughing when the turbo kicked in and smoked their rides. Miss that car, my parents sold it to our neighbour three years ago. No rust and still looks and runs great. Expensive to maintain, though.

Windogg,

Your acronym of VOLVO, does not suit me. I prefer Vehicle Of Laughable Velocity Obtained.

Hittin 85(speed governed, but who goes that fast in metro Denver, honestly?) is a breeze with my Volvo. It's a great cruiser, has a great turning radius, and is all around fun. WOuld you prefer people buy Ford Excursions to Volvo's? Those people you mention give Volvo owners a bad name. We're not all like that!

My AC sucks too. The 264 designation was not applied to the '82 Volvo. Preceeding Volvo's yes, but not mine. I recall the 264 was last applied to the 1980 model year. As for the straight six, I had no idea Renault made it. You learn soemthing new everyday No wonder the '82 GLE was the last year of the straight 6 Volvo. It was the most problematic Volvo ever. It's still more fun than the 240s. My car is in great shape mechanically(108,000 miles...not too shabby for an 18yr old car), just it's been sitting out in the sun too long. I'd love to get my hands on the 240 Turbo. WHOOOSH! Intercooler power, baby!! Did you know the P1800 holds the Guinness Book Of Record's World record for most miles on a car? It's something insane like 1,000,000 miles. Yes. Over one million. As for the car's looks, my dad and I disagree with each other on that subject. I love it and he hates it. Colin Powell loves it, and owns one too! What a clean looking car. But alas, the 240 is the epitome of Volvo. VOLVO POWER!

Does everyone else' 240 have only two speakers? As for the 740 Turbo, damn that's a nice and quick car. I'd love to have one of those too!

Isla,

Oh, if only more women shared your opinion. I'd forego looking for a nice 'rado, and keep the Volvo

hmm...my ac was great in the 7 series, and i don't know how volvo does it, but yes, their turning radius is smaller than almost any other car that i have ever seen, what i wouldn't give for my honda to turn in that small of a space now...

I'm the proud owner of an 85' 740 GLE. No turbo, but this thing is damn nice to drive - especially after using my parent's 88 Caravan for a year.. (ugh).

Its built solid, and since my brother owned it before me, its got an awesome sound system in it. The car has an awful oil leak that isn't worth fixing (the engine has to come out, and go back in for it to be fixed). Good thing oil is cheap.

Gotta say, I loved my dad's old (850?) turbo. When I first got my liscense, the turbo caught me off guard on a rainy night though, and I ended up doing a 180 - taking out the front right wheel and suspension in teh process. Inexperience and rain after a long day (at night) suck. I paid that one off after a few months, and no harm was done.

I think it was a 760 turbo that saved my life once - I was 12, my dad was driving. I used to be a competetive swimmer (lengths and such). One Saturday morning (4:00am), on the way to a swim meet in an adjacent city in the early spring. The road had black ice on it, and my dad had cruise control on. I was asleep, and we were in the left lane (2 lanes in each direction). The car spun almost 90º left, and then (overcompensation I suppose) 180º to the right - waking me up. We were going ~110Km/h sideways on the highway, and directly in front of us was a (grain?) double-length semi. We went right inbetween the two compartments (the cargo things for the grain), right where there is a pivot point at the end of the first half of the semi, and before the second compartment - wheels on both sides of us.

Needless to say, I was screaming like crazy. The wheels of this thing were directly outside my window - and higher than my head (front passenger). My dad's window popped out, and mine shattered into the car. It must have been about 20 seconds or so before the semi driver even noticed we were there, and began to slow down. He told us afterward that he didn't even feel us there (he was pulling the car sideways at ~110Km/h on a highway...). It wasn't till he say the rear-end of a car sticking out the side of his semi that he got a big shock.

The car was totaled - shaped like a banana, the front roof pushed down, and the wheels on an angle - , but neither of us had but a scratch on us - and had we been driving another car, I'm sure we would be dead. Side impact beams are a wonderful thing.

I didn't go to my swim meet.

--The moral is... I love volvos. Oh, and Isla, you're not the only one who thinks that... My girlfriend does too.

You cant hate volvos.

I had a 1980 244 DL. When the body finally rusted out in 1998, the engine (never having major work) had 540,000 miles on it. (actually 536k, but I round up )

Let's see anyone beat that.

I miss my volvo I should have called the company and told them about the work it needed and see if they would have paid for it. The engine never burned any oil at all. Amazing car, simply amazing. 4 banger though, but an inline slant 4. It had great acceleration till 60-65, but its top speed was only 90 The gearing in it was everything. Gas mileage sucked at 18-20 though

NaughtyusMaximus,

How could you destroy a volvo? A semi must've run into it...cause nothing else can take it out. You're lucky you got out though. Volvo's rock! As for the particular Volvos. 850 Turbos are relatively new, the first ones came here in '94. There were no 750s, maybe 740 or 760. The 850 was a huge step for Volvo, since it was one of the few cars that had a nicely tuned 5 cylinder engine. The fuel economy of the four-cylinder, and the refinement of the six.

DaBonehead,

You just want it back cause you know chicks dig it now

<<A semi must've run into it>>

...Or the other way around.
I'll see if I can find the picture of the car afterward - its really not too bad, but it would have cost more to repair it than to simply buy a new one (I think over $6000CDN worth of damage and the insurance co. considers it a wreck - not sure on that number though.).

I've also got a picture with me of my family's cars lined up in our driveway.
All Volvos. Four of them (My brother and I, my sister, and my dad).

My dad had a Volvo 86' 240DL. We didnt treat the car very well, ie. going 10,000 w/out oil change and etc. but it lasted for 436,000miles. Our Volvo only had two terrible sounding speakers for the radio. My dad has gone about 75-80mph in the 240 but there was alot of wind noise and seemed a little unstable. My dad once drove like 55mph in a parking lot and swerved side to side but since the road holding wasnt the best in the world the 240 started skidding. My mom has made the car skid though but shifting to neutral revving the engine and shifting to drive, but that wasnt very good on the tranny.
