I have a Voodoo 3000 PCI in my server. You need a videocard in order to boot...plus sometimes I hook it up to my KVM.

Anyway, I did some tidying-up in there tonight and am running it w/the side panel off.

That sucker gets HOT. Too hot to touch! :Q Way hotter than my overclocked 9800! The HS is "2-second touch" hot. The PCB is about "4-second touch" hot.

Cripes, why so hot?

The system is stable as heck. In fact, it's run 24/7/365 in a closet. I'm just curious why an ancient, 16mb videocard runs hot enough to fry an egg on.

hmmm so you test hotness by touching them while they are still on...

maybe they need a 2 slot cooling solution?

I have a Voodoo Blaster Banshee. Same applies here. No fan, just a heatsink. I think its just old crap video cards....

Of course. That's the only real way to do it. I ground myself by touching the PS case first, then I poke around. In 15+ years of doing this, I've never fried anything.

Take the fan off the stock 9800 heatsink and watch how long the card runs and how hot it gets. You're comparing apples to oranges.

Yup, My point exactly. Thas about when they figured out they needed a fan....

Hmm, didn't think about that. I just don't see those two cards even in the same Millenium.

Well...hehehehe, I guess technically they are NOT in the same Millenium. One was built pre-2000, the other, post-2000.

How cool is that? I have "Spanning Technologies Videocards!" Sounds mighty powerful, doesn't it?

My old Voodoo III 2000 AGP in my server is about that hot. If I touch the HS it hurts after about 2 seconds and the bottom is like you said 4 seconds before I move my finger! It's been dead stable for years in different systems running hot as heck. I think that was the way the Voodoo cards ran. Newer cards would burn up in a short time if you took off the Fan. Seen a TI4200 die with the fan stopped for a time in a friends system. The fan died when he was playing Everquest and he got artifacts on the screen. by the time he turned it off and found the dead fan the GPU was damaged and even with a new FAN and HS still gets artifacts all over the screen.

Not to mention the die process. The old voodoo cards use like a .28nm process. The new cards use .13. That in itself will allow the chip to run much cooler. You could actually run a 9800pro with no fan (not a good idea, but possible with good case cooling).

Yeah the die shrink definitely contributes to the overall coolness but that's well overshadowed by the fact that today's gpu's have about 10x as many transistors and consume a lot more power than the Voodoo 3's of yesteryear. It's mostly the fan on top of the HS that contributes to cooler vid cards. Slap a fan on your voodoo 3 and it should be significantly cooler

I gave my parents and old Nvidia Geforce 256 DDR. If I touch my finger to the top side of the card where the core would be for much longer than 1 seconds I think I would really burn bad. That thing runs much hotter than my OCed 9500 Pro. I realize I have better cooling on the Raddy but I think the Geforce card should still be a bit cooler than it is at stock.

That's exactly why I attached a 40mm fan to my old V3-3K.
That, and overclocking
