From a Justice Department official
Claims were dismissed against the other defendants based on a careful assessment of the facts and the law.

Does anyone have any evidence that this wasn't the case? Or is this just a good story?

Yeah I remember this story, I watched it "unravel" on Fox live and marveled at how quickly it got buried due to the poor acting. Almost as bad as the acting during the Ashely Todd story.

 BTW do you know what the old Blank Panthers morphed into? The Crips and the Bloods.

 Source, plz.
When the BPP disbanded many of the members went on to join the CRIPS which at first was a Political Activist party. Just search for articles about the origin of both the Crips and the Bloods and the BPP is predominatly mentioned.
Well, I checked Wiki for the Crips:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crips

And the Black Panthers are mentioned twice:

Gang activity in South Central Los Angeles has its roots in a variety of factors dating back to the 1950s and 60s including: post-World War II economic decline leading to joblessness and poverty, racial segregation leading to the formation of black "street clubs" by young African-American men who were excluded from organizations such as the Boy Scouts, and the waning of black nationalist organizations such as the Black Panther Party and the Black Power Movement

People in the neighborhood then began calling them cripples, or "Crips" for short.[17] The name had no political, organizational, cryptic, or acronymic meaning. Williams, in his memoir, further discounted claims that the group was a spin-off of the Black Panther Party or formed for a community agenda, the name "depicted a fighting alliance against street gangs?nothing more, nothing less", Williams wrote

Wiki doesn't mention the Black Panther party on its Bloods page at all , so this would seem to contradict that the Crips were formed from the Black Panther Party.
BASTARDS OF THE PARTY

Text

The CRIPs were not always the gang-bangers they are known to be. The CRIPs were formed in 1969. Raymond Washington, a high school student at the time founded the organization in response to the increasing level of police harassment of the Black community.

CRIPs stood for Community Resources for Independent People. It was styled on the Black Panther Party .

At first I thought you meant it formed in Raymond, washington..thats a very small town near me:laugh:

"Justice Department political appointees overruled career lawyers and ended a civil complaint accusing three members of the New Black Panther Party for Self-Defense of wielding a nightstick and intimidating voters at a Philadelphia polling place last Election Day, according to documents and interviews.

The incident - which gained national attention when it was captured on videotape and distributed on YouTube - had prompted the government to sue the men, saying they violated the 1965 Voting Rights Act by scaring would-be voters with the weapon, racial slurs and military-style uniforms.

Career lawyers pursued the case for months, including obtaining an affidavit from a prominent 1960s civil rights activist who witnessed the confrontation and described it as "the most blatant form of voter intimidation" that he had seen, even during the voting rights crisis in Mississippi a half-century ago."

I remember discussion about this incident in P&N when it happened, but I don't remember the substance of it. Regardless, this seems like a clear case of voter intimidation to me. They basically got a slap on the wrist: they can't appear at polling locations in Philadelphia on election days.

And political appointees overruling career lawyers for the Justice Dept.? Excellent, more of the same crap we've been dealing with for the past 8 years.

This is completely unacceptable. Start a writing compaign to the US Justice Department to start an investigation in this.

Like it or not, voter intimidation is an essential part of American politics. It will never go away. Get used to it and stop complaining.

I've found it so hard to believe that these guys have gotten away with this so far.

Was there "disruption"? All I remember were 2 guys standing there and a guy with a camera hassling them about their standing there.

Two guys (in fatigues) with clubs in front of door to polls and you remember them being hassled with a camera. No wonder US is going down the potty.

I honestly didn't think conservatives cared this much about accusations of "voter intimidation", especially after you brushed off all the stories of it in 2000 and 2004.

Were they "stories" or was there videotaped evidence? What are the names of the people involved is said instances? Were they charged with any crimes? Were they let off the hook? You kind of left a little information of of your reply.

Stick to the topic.

These guys were videotaped. The evidence of voter intimidation was clear and not hearsay. It is a travesty of our judicial system that there is no consequence to their actions.

LOL, you mean like the prosecutor scandal where political appointees tried to force out respected prosecutors for not pursuing political cases?

Ok, gotcha.

Wait so according to the Wiki entry the Crips, a violent street gang started because some black guys couldn't get into the boy scouts?? LOLOLOL the shit that they allow on wiki is laughable and insulting.

Edit: Oh and Crips were about as much of political movement as the Latin Kings were after the FEDS cracked down on them.

I wonder if the Democrats in congress will demand investigations over the firing of this justice department lawyer.

That you would oppose however because you believe that the members of the executive branch work at the pleasure of the president, right?

I couldn't care less but if the Democrats want to politicize it then it goes both ways....that is unless they are hypocrites.

Well they did not fire him.

http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2009/dec/29/justice-transfers-panthers-pursuer-out-of-dc-offic/

They basically sent him away to finish out his career in South Carolina...maybe in the hopes he resigns. Nothing will be done. Nothing was done when White house canned Gerald Walpin after he investigated a nonprofit run by an obama supporter, Kevin Johnson, who used government grants to raise staff salaries rather than use it as intended.

Hope and Change.
