Murdock isn't the defrag that came with w2k just a lite version of diskeeper? I'd believe they would have similar behaviour??

It was designed by Executive FOR Windows...But there is no comparison.
I can defrag 2, 40 gig Maxtors and 1 GXP 45 gig in 7 or 8 minutes...ALL OF THEM in 7-8 minutes. It has a frag guard feature that runs constantly if you set it to do so...It's quite a program.
Plus it defrags the paging file too.
Go to executive.com and do some reading.
Check out DiscAlert while you're there.
I'm a beta tester for Executive so I am biased
Of course I only beta for the best companies...I hate junk software !

Never had a problem defragging win2k with diskeeper but it's very slow, my drive 20GB with 4GB used - time to defrag 2hrs40mins approx. boottime defrag for the swapfile even slower

make sure you run error-checking before each defrag

Diskeeper 6 runs pretty slowly on my system too, but I run it as thorough as I can. Tell you what tho, does the job nicely. I really put Diskeeper on a pedestal.

Do what ??? What are you running a pentium 75 ????
The most fragged drive in the world shouldn't take 20 minutes ?????
...on a 400 + mhz machine....

My heavily fragmented 4.3 GB hard disk, it will go in about 10 to 15 minutes...not bad (this is a K6-2 475 mhz w/ 192 MB RAM). BTW, I've noticed that beyond 128 MB of RAM, it doesn't make much of a difference in defragging speed depending on how much RAM you have. I think it's more dependent on disk speed (will have definite defragging benchmarks when I get my 30 GB 7200 RPM disk ).

Murdock, I just read that Diskeeper 6.0 is not compatible with WinXP. Is this really the case and if so are they going to release a patch/new version to remedy this?

Best Regards, John

<< if you want to fix this use the win2k cd and repair the installtion. >>

unfortunatley, it is hardly ever that easy, at least not for me. win2k always fails to read my current win2k config and location, etc, so the restor fails. the only way it will work is if i can predict when i think i'm going ot have a problem.. then i create a restore/system disk (run backup util) and most of the time i can restore my system with that disk.

Ok..I just got off the horn with the guys at Executive...
It works fine w/ XP. I tried it, just now, ..So have other testers...
It's not "officially' compatable because XP is not "officially" released.

Unlike other companies..Executive makes DAMN SURE the product is right before you get it.
If there is a glitch, so far none, it WILL be patched as XP is officially released....

It will work fine in XP..."unofficially"... MY opinion.

In the old days of DOS, you could run defrag and it would move everything, all nice and neat, to the "front" of the HD. After running Diskkeepper, it's still a jumbled up mess. And, I can never get it to clear up ALL the fragmented files, it always leaves at least one fraged file. Can somebody shed some light on this ? An inquiring mind wants to know.

Basically, from what I understand, the file fragments that remain are part of "file sharing " betweeen programs.
This is often the case with programs that are related such as Gator, GoZilla,Front Page, Dreamweaver, Homesite... and allot of the Norton products that have the exact same code as a competitive product so when you install.....rather than overwriting they simply share a file.
When you defrag it is a tug of war as to where to move the file so it just stays in the same place...."fragmented" but not really....just caught in the middle. Just MY understanding of it.....( I could be full of Zhoot ?)
Anyone else ????
