I finally decided that I need to learn to dance. Now the question is, who is going to teach me. Should I ask the gf or go to a professional?

Check with your local black person.

learning for a GF can be fun. but if you want to impress her than get lessons and then take her out.

Is your girlfriend qualified to teach dance? If not, go to a professional. Maybe take lessons with the girlfriend...

No idea, I assumed all women know how to dance and can teach me the very basics so I don't look like an idiot on the dance floor.

Most women have no clue how to dance. Unless you consider grinding up on some dudes crotch dancing, in which case most of them are naturals.

Real dancing (ballroom, ballet, and even "hip-hop") takes quite a bit of skill and practice, and is not something most girls instinctively know how to do.

edit: Let's be honest. 99.999% of what you are going to witness or take part in at a club isn't real dancing. It's just drunk people grinding and pretending to dance. If that's all you are going for, then I wouldn't bother with lessons.

Ding!

Let's just say that if you bust out with the box step in the middle of a nightclub while the DJ blasts Nine Inch Nails' Closer, you're going to feel like you wasted your money with lessons.

If you are going to go to some weddings (seem to be a lot of weddings to go to these days) and you have to endure 5 hours of Frank Sinatra, by all means, you're going to make a lot of grandmothers pretty excited. Take those lessons, son.

Tons of truth. But most girls are definitely not naturals at dance, even at "grinding" and that type of club dancing. I've gone dancing with a number of girls that just left me speechless about how poorly coordinated they were. Because, honestly, all you need to be a "good" dancer when it comes to party/club dancing (grinding et al) is have a good sense of rhythm and be able to listen to music.

Either you have rhythm or you don't. The only thing dance lessons are good for is teaching you to do specific pre-determined dance moves/steps.
