What I find the most disgusting about all of this... besides the violent thugs who burn police cars and throw bricks at non-violent bystanders and police alike... are the umbrella protest organizations who refused to distance themselves from violent protest.

I have no patience for such organizations who are more than willing to turn a blind eye to violence, even if they don't commit the violence themselves.

Meanwhile, one government official said something that made me laugh. He walked into the media room where the reporters all hang out with their gear. During all of this, all the foreign correspondents were glued to their TVs... watching the World Cup.

In any case, the refreshing part was all the non-violent protestors going out of their way to tell reporters that the violent protestors had nothing to do with them, and they were appalled that the violent thugs were using them as cover.

Rubbish. The Black Block want police to over-react and film that for anarchist propaganda. The police has been very stayed for a while. They are much more active now, having identified the 'leaders' and the snatch squads are moving in in puntual clashes to grab and arrest the main troublemakers before they can change clothes and disappear in the crowd.

I am Liberal Party, yes, socially progressive and fiscally centre, but I am also somewhat authoritarian. As a Canadian I was raised to believe in Peace, Order and Good Government, not Violence, Chaos and Anarchy.

Anyways, it's interesting to see on TV the phalanxes of police in my usual stomping grounds, and I just saw a scene of a bunch of people lying on the ground with their hands zip-tied behind their backs. They're just aggressive students and stuff though apparently.

The claim by some is that part of that is accounting method. ie. If you account for the costs differently it might "only" be a few hundred million $. That's still damn expensive though.

Sarkozy threw in a dig too, saying that it would cost 10X less in France next year.

They arrested 65 before they even got to the more recent scenes with the zip-tied people, with more than half of those 65 being from today.

There are also people hiding in the bushes in Queen's Park and refusing to come out from behind the bushes when told by police. The police are aiming guns with rubber bullets, but haven't fired.

To be honest, I'd be protesting as well if I lived in Canada! I was averaging 15% sales tax on everything I bought the last time I visited Ontario, and I can only imagine what the income and property taxes are on top of that.
