Why the hell would these people surround a burning car? Have they not seen what Hollywood has taught as to what happens to burning vehicles?!?!!

To be honest, I'd be protesting as well if I lived in Canada! I was averaging 15% sales tax on everything I bought the last time I visited Ontario, and I can only imagine what the income and property taxes are on top of that.

Stuff runs differently in other parts of the world

Since you're not a Canadian citizen, you could have claimed some the taxes at the border.

What amazes me is the level of support these thugs get from posters on the CBC web site, an ultra left wing news organization funded by Canadian tax payers.

Haha ultra left is a bit of a stretch, liberal maybe.

Uh, pretty much people don't know anything about these g20 meetings.

Many of the protesters are right wing nationalists. You know the right wing issue with the one world government that the United Nations is going to form and take away American rights? Well, that's happening at the G20 meetings. Economic decisions that affect member countries are being made not in a public forum, not by the people of the countries involved, but by this group that meets and makes rules that become virtually the law in the member countries.

In fact, the G20 meetings are probably far more important than the United Nations meetings to one world government.

Security reasons? 20 World Leaders on 1 boat?

I understand protesting. I don't understand the people that go with the intention of creating violence. I also don't understand spending $1 Billion on one or 2 meetings (G8 + G20). Way to go "conservatives".

Surround it with a dozen Aegis destroyers above, and a half dozen Los Angeles class subs below. If you're really worried, put them on an aircraft carrier.

Hey, if you really want to spoil the protesters fun, hold the meeting up on the main highway running through Toronto. When I was up there in May, it was a frikkin' parking lot at 8 o'clock at night! Put all the leaders in a stretch limo, and start driving....the protesters will never catch up!!

The CBC isn't ultra left wing. It's left of center, but not by much. It is mandated by law to be balanced.

The posters on the site, on the other hand, are very left wing. All of the neo-communist posts get modded up by the community (I guess they have no jobs?), and any comment reflecting any semblance of realistic thought gets modded down.

The claim by some is that part of that is accounting method. ie. If you account for the costs differently it might "only" be a few hundred million $. That's still damn expensive though.

Sarkozy threw in a dig too, saying that it would cost 10X less in France next year.

Could be true. I heard that when Pittsburgh had its hoopla last year the costs were only $18 million in payments to the police department, but that a lot of the other costs weren't accounted for.

Looks like a 6th police cruiser has been lit on fire.

Someone on the CBC (a blogger for them) floated the idea that the police cruisers there are decoys... stripped down cheap versions that give the rioters something to damage and burn in place of shops etc. No idea if this is true or not.

I often tend to ignore comments in newspaper articles and TV news sites. They are dominated by nutjobs.

In any case, if you listen to the CBC reports, they are firmly in support of the police so far. The terms being used are "hooligans", "thugs", etc. for the violent protestors. You would be hard-pressed to perceive any of these CBC news reports as significantly left.

I don't buy that. One was apparently damaged and left there. Then it got torched.

Income tax is not much different than the US. A little higher, but not drastically so. Property tax of course depends on where you live.

And Ontario (and BC too) are going to a harmonized sales tax (HST). This will be a value-added tax, so it will be very efficient and only tax the added value at each stop along the production/distribution/retail line, rather than compounding the tax. I don't know how the sales tax structure works in the US typically, but you could be paying tax on tax there.

Oh, and the business tax structure in Canada (especially BC) is much more attractive than in the US.

Fucking thugs; disgraceful.

As much as I disagree with Harper for holding the summit in downtown Toronto, necessitating massive security spending, much of the blame lies with these thugs who are not interested in peaceful protest, but rather the destruction of public property.

I'm a left-winger. I dislike Harper and his stance on maternal health (cutting funding for abortion). I dislike the move towards NWO and an overly globalized economy. I disagree with much of what the World Bank and IMF do.

However, torching police cars and smashing shit is absolutely the wrong way to protest.

Well I hope that these idiots protester group get destroyed once and for all so that they can never cause trouble like this ever again. They should be treated like partisans and enemies of the state and dealt with that way. I hate this stupid mild tell them to leave/tear gas approach with individuals who clearly would not use any such restraint were the roles reversed.

My report from the street: I walked down Bay Street during the worst of today's events from Dundas to King, and then headed home down Richmond.

Just a bunch of assholes with really stupid signs (like "Get Out Of Kashmir!") milling around looking for something exciting to move towards. The police at one point formed a column about four men abreast, numbering about a hundred, and marched down the centre Bay to clear it and get to one of the cars that was on fire. They're doing a great job. I'm worried about night falling as we speak - I hope they've got enough lights to brighten the perimeter all around to keep security tight around the convention centre.

I've seen a significant amount of hippies today due to them setting up a tent city at Allan Gardens which isn't that far north of me. I believe the police again formed a phalanx and cleared them out of there. Hope they torched everything left behind in the area.

Also nabbed someone from Global, someone from CTV, gave a girl from Torontoist a whack with a baton, and punched/kneed the crap out of what seemed like some random people too near their advancing line. Definitely hasn't been a flawless performance.
