War of the Worlds - 2005

It wasn't even one-tenth the movie that the Gene Berry / 1953 Original was, even with a gazillion 'Special Effects'.

War of the Worlds was "Tom Cruise struggles with being a father, and oh, there are aliens, too". I had expected something more like the original version.

It would have been better with Dennis Quaid as the lead and Randy Quaid as Tim Robbins character.

There were some insane plotholes though... if aliens are attacking major cities, why the hell wouldnt boston be flattened?

If the aliens were farming humans for their blood, why were they eradicating them at the start? Why were their shields down at the end of the movie? Bacteria kills aliens, but I don't think it disables shields? Also did the aliens block everything with their shield or just weapon projectiles? Where were all the suicide bombers scaling those puppies and arranging meetings with allah?

It looked like the robots themselves had living tissue also in one scene. The scene that has to do with grenades .

I didn't see the new War of the Worlds movie this summer. A friend saw it and he told me matter of factly that Independence Day was better.

That was enough to make me steer clear of it.

No! The aliens inside the strider pod lived in a liquid space thus all the jizz spilling out whenever they opened it, and the big sucker in the grenade scene must have been part of that membrane but I refuse to believe that it was in fact the source which powered the shields.

Independence Day was good also, I probably enjoyed that more because it showed things on a large scale as opposed to being limited to tom and his annoying children that needed some krazy beatings. But the WotW captured terror much better then ID imo, just wish they did not limit the movie from one pov.

I didnt like the 2005 version at all, too slow and too many annoying characters I could care less about. good effects though.

the book was the best

If you think about it their whole society might have been built around war and had no concentration on medical science.

*shrug* just a possibility. I've read about armies on earth like that.

The only thing the 2005 movie version copied from the book was the fact that there were aliens that attacked earth and the army fought it.

As I've said before: Great first half. Very few movies keep you on the edge of the seat as well as this one did. But horrid second half. Combine 1/2 good with 1/2 bad and you get mediocre, which is what I would rank this movie.
