Can you give some examples of what I can do with this app?

here's my setup:

Monday-friday between 9am and 5pm & in range of work wifi:
silent

in range of home wifi:
ringer to max, enable 2g (since i'll be on wifi)

leaving range of home wifi:
enable 3g

when charging:
increase screen timeout to 5mins

when charging between the hours of 11pm and 6am:
silent, decrease screen timeout to 5 seconds

when charging with a music app open:
increase screen timeout to 10 minutes

this is a pretty simple setup - you can get much, much more complex if you are willing to dig into the app.

There is a simple free tasker called llama; which is good for things like turn this off at this time or in this place. I havent' used tasker and it looks more powerful but for my usage llama seems ok (mostly I like to turn off mobile data and certain notifications at night and switch on wifi while at work).

I tried llama last year or so, and I could never get the location changes to work right. I would get it to "learn" my home and work areas but it either wouldn't recognize when I was in the area, or it would make changes miles away. In short... I got what I paid for.

Does Tasker introduce any new ways of detecting location that Llama can't do?

My understanding is that Llama can use connections to cell towers, GPS, and/or WiFi signals. GPS is wasteful of battery life, so I've used cell towers but that can be an issue when the cell tower goes down (seems to happen a bit near my work, where I get no bars and Llama doesn't know where I am for sure).

I want my phone to auto start Pandora when I enter my car and it auto pairs with my cars bluetooth. Can this app do that? I.e. if it detects my cars bluetooth, autostart pandora? This can't be GPS or cell tower location based

yes, there is a "bluetooth connected" state which you can use to trigger events such as launching an app.

the bluetooth on your phone would need to be on though.

You can even specify the bluetooth device to trigger the task, in case you have others that aren't in your car. I use it to turn on Car Mode, since I keep my bluetooth headset in the car.

FYI there is a free option that could work instead. SmartActions (made by Motorola). I bought Tasker and coworker told me about the other. Looked at both. SmartActions seems to be more user friendly, but not quite as free to customize as tasker is.

What phone do you have? Lots of newer models can do this with NFC (using Tec Tiles or something similar).

Yup, I like NFC and have a "car mode" tag. Tap it and it turns on bluetooth, cranks all volumes to max, and disables wifi if on. If I wanted to start an app with it as well I could.

Couple of mine:

At Gym:
Ringer 3
Notifications off
Bluetooth on
Media volume 10
Open slacker radio

Sleep mode:
9:30 - 6:15am when at home
Ringer 3
Notifications off
Notification led off

Meeting mode:
At work face down
Silent mode

It's just a really useful automation app so you don't have to Futz with your phone so often.

It's a good little app. I use NFC in my car and a few other places, because then there's no futzing with my phone AT ALL, but I grabbed this anyway so I could use it in places where NFC is impractical, like in a movie theater, or at a client meeting on the road, etc. At this price why not?

nfc also has the limitation that it requires physical action (however small). Also, you need to tap a second time to revert settings whereas tasker can do it automatically.

The advantage of nfc is that there's no ambiguity about location. if you tap the car tag, you're in the car, no questions.

Hrm. I don't have to do anything at all to get my Galaxy SIII to go into "car" mode besides put the phone down on the TecTile (I have it stuck inside the nook in the dash where I set the phone when driving). I get in the car, put the phone down, it turns on bluetooth, turns off the phone's ringer (since the car handles that), and turns off wifi. When I get out of the car (out of range of the TecTile in the car), it puts everything back how it was (bluetooth off, ringer back on vibrate, wifi on).

But I agree that Tasker is more versatile despite requiring slightly more set up / interaction.

The CustomActions app gets around NFC limitations.

If you want to use NFC tags then use the NFC. If you don't want to buy/program/use tags or don't have that feature on your phone then Tasker or CustomActions fits the bill. It can pull off GPS location, available wifi, time of day, bluetooth signals, sensor inputs or a ton of other options. CA is free and gives you most of this functionality. Tasker is a paid app that allows you to really get into some customized scripting. CA will cover 95% of use scenarios.

right, by physical action all I meant that you have to place it on a certain spot.

I was not aware that the phone could detect being removed from the NFC tag. This was one of my main reasons for going with tasker vs. nfc. Had to do anything special to get that to work?

I did that with mine. It would kill the stock music player then prompt me with a menu to pick what I wanted to listen to. Google music, slacker, Pandora or stock music player.
