Electronicswatch.com has toshiba's midline dvd player for $169 and a $20 rebate... Its on their front page. This is the same dvd player I have, pretty good quality, single disc, component out, all that good stuff. (I bought it in a mercata powerbuy for the same price, after getting 10% off with the mercata new member discount, so this isn't a bad price... retail's for about $200 ~ $250 in stores) UPDATE:
[*]Price starts at $169 @ electronicswatch.com
[*]$20 Mail in rebate from seller.

[*]10 Free rentals from Hollywood video straight from toshiba

Overall, better deal.

the toshiba website says no....you'd have to go up to the sd2200 to play vcd's.
ok, i just checked mine personally, and it will not play burned cd-r's or vcd's. HOWEVER, most likely you'll be running this into either a stereo or a receiver, and chances are, those will play your cd-r's. If you're really into vcd's (high bandwidth college student downloading divx 24/7?), you'll want to go up to the sd2200 or possibly check the sd1650.

Actually that's a hot deal! These are awesome players. They have all the features of $300+ players at half the cost, hoave great enhanced sound (Toshiba uses a technique called "Spatializer" that they came up with to enhance 3D sound), and htey have a 27 bit sound processor (most DVD players only have a 24 bit---that means less or no skipping).

Highly recommended!

It will play VCD's and burned CD's. I've played SW Episode 1 on VCD, and copy of it, and burned music CD's on mine.

Tip- Use 8X or higher CD-R's or the player may have a problem reading it (much like car CD players).

Mine plays VCD's just fine! What's up with that?

VCD's are crappy anyhow...kind of a non-feature

I'm 99% sure its going to be region 1, its really hard to find a dvd player without region encoding..

Not much call for VCD's anymore (unless you live in SE Asia or you're a web pirate ).

I have this dvd player and it will not play my cd-rs. For those that are able to play cd-rs and VCD's, what brand of media are you using. I have tried imation, kodak, pny, and memorex without sucess. If I find out the type that works I will just buy some of that. Anyone???I have not tried VCDs, but cdrs would rule.

They just had a $20 mail in rebate on that model at Toshiba's website a few days ago, I wound up getting it for $119. And I didn't have any luck with CD-R's either, but still a good DVD player for the money. Here is the link for the deal I found: Link

Dave

EDIT: in the other thread, the link for the $20 rebate is still good.

I agree it is a great player. Component video output, zoom feature, and coax digital out (better than optical IMHO). Just you cdr guys, What are you using media wise?

so is this $20 from toshiba? on top of the $20 from the store... that would be $169 - $20 - $20 = $129, and there's a toshiba link for free rentals... this deal may be better than even I originally thought

Anyone who is on the fence and wants the best DVD Player for your buck this is it, well actually it's the Toshiba SD1200 but that's going to be harder to find at this great price.

Also some Anandtechers have noted seeing this DVD Player for $149 at their local Safeway and Lowe's B&M grocery stores (I know - sounds wacky but true).

Rossman, I have to disagree with your 1200 comment. My parents have the 1200 and I have the 1600. Both are almost identical, excpet for one important difference. The 1600 remote is much better than the 1200. The 1200 remote has a horrible layout and feel IMHO. The 1600 fixed this, and if I didn't have a universal remote than kicked butt (radio shack 14-1994) I would hold it constantly during playback.

This player doesn't play "Art Of War". I tried it on mines and it didn't work, it didn't work on alot of other 1600's.

<< This player doesn't play "Art Of War". I tried it on mines and it didn't work, it didn't work on alot of other 1600's. >>

...
Odd, seems like whoever produces Art Of War either made it with invalid encryption standards, or stamped the wrong region code on it. Either way, I wouldn't blame this on the player, I'd blame it on the dvd, or rather, the producer of the DVD.

What is a VCD??? Is it a VIDEO CD??? Just a guess....does it store more data? I'm ignorant with respect to this....and any help would be appreciated.

A vcd is in fact a video cd... adaptec's easy cd creator (and probably other burning programs) can burn specially formatted mpegs onto cd's such that SOME dvd players can play them... its really pointless though, the quality usually sucks, and very few people have enough mpeg format movies to make burning vcd's worthwhile...I guess if you do a lot with video editing (home movies) and wanted to send movies to your friends/family with dvd players, this might be important; I, personally, have never even bothered with them, I dont see the point.

I've had the player for about two months and like it alot. I got it back when MS was doing the 20% off etc., and paid $119 for it. Even at $149 its a good deal.

"Art of War?" I haven't tried that yet. I wonder why it doesn't work?
