Watching DVDs on LCDs

whenever i watch DVDs on my lcd at full screen, the video doesn't seem to be "crystal clear" like it would be compared to my big screen tv. is this because of the native resolution of the LCD?

if it's shown with a smaller screen, it is very clear. however, if i set it on full screen, it's a tad pixilated.

edit: i turned of CLEV in the powerdvd options and it seems to have minimized most of the pixilation.

It's because your not watching it at the LCD's native resolution.

Sounds like a setting problem perhaps? What LCD? I just tried the widescreen Matrix on my PC, and the picture looks better than the TV (2005fpw lcd though). This was just with vlc (www.videolan.org), too.

it's a sony sdm-hx73. my dvd player is a really piece of crap (12X). could a better quality dvd player produce better video quality?

It is possible. How are you connecting them anyway? svideo? I am plugged in via DVI.

i'm on dvi as well. i'll be getting a new NEC dvd burner to replace my old dvd-rom anyway.

I don't think the actual DVD drive is the problem, especially if the video looks good at native res. I suspect either your software DVD player isn't using the best algorithms (or you haven't selected the best settings), or your LCD doesn't do well with non-native resolutions.

Have you tried playing the DVD with Windows Media Player? Does it look any different?

but the dvd player is a really piece of crap. sometimes when watching a dvd, it will pause for 2 minutes and then play again. also, sometimes it takes over a minute for the dvd to load. (insert the disc into the dvd drive)

edit; for people who have seen the windows media HD videos. are the windows media HD video way more clearer than dvd playback? because this is true for me.

Yeah, as said in other thread WMV-HD is much higher resolution. Make sure the discs are clean and DMA is enabled for the storage controllers is all I can suggest for the actual problems. The reason DVD can look worse on the LCD full-screen is because it is being upsampled from 480 to 1024. On your big screen TV it may not be upsampled at all, or maybe only to 540 or 720 and the larger physical size of the screen and use of lenses (presumably) smooths out imperfections as well. To improve the picture on the LCD you may want to try different de-interlacing options (namely to prevent overprocessing a progressive source) and also sometimes, in the past at least, the hardware acceleration option has affected picture quality.

To clarify, by "dvd player," you mean DVD drive or reader. PowerDVD would be the player, IMO.
