I have some bottled water with a besy by date of 10-16-09. It's water how can it go bad?
And nutrition facts on the label. there must be some government regulation to put an expiration date on water.

Tis a ploy to get you to throw it out and buy more. Don't fall for this bottled water BS; make your own water.

Incidentally, I have dranked bottled water that had bounced around in the bed of a pickup in the AZ sun for months on end. It tasted like crap.

Expiration date is a legality left over from legislation passed years ago. As long as the bottle is sealed, it should last for years before the seal breaks or any contaminants that happen to be left over from bottling lead to germination. You're more likely to get sick off tap water than "expired" bottled water.

When I was living in the Mojave desert I always left a bottle of emergency water in the car. Pulled it out after one year and decided to drink it.
Tasted like dog ass. I dunno why.

Because bottled water can actually go bad... if exposed to heat or sunlight or well just about anything.....
Though I would normally associate it with a kind of plastic taste.
While tap water is usually more a metallic or mineral taste... at least where I am.

Why do you know what dog ass tastes like
I believe that there was a Sarah Silverman Show episode about this.

When I was visiting Stennis (NASA facility on the Gulf Coast) with one of my professors, one of the engineers whipped out a case of bottled water that expired three years before we drank it, all the while sitting in a storeroom with goodness knows what. We did not realize this until after a few gulps and than after that, we just said screw it and finished it off. The NASA folks were drinking them as well, so it is not like they were playing some cruel joke on us.

We are all still here.

If you think bottled water is a sham heres one for you. Several years ago when I worked as a contractor with my father painting, we went into the usual paint store to get some supplies. Right next to the paint thinner was this new product; upon reading it, it was basically "paint thinner" for water-based acrylic paint.

You clean water based paint with ... water. Sure enough on the back of this very small (pint maybe?) fancy 6$ bottle lost in all the bullshit about how great it was; Ingredients; Water.

At that point I knew I was in the wrong business.

I met someone who worked for the IL government and said that the bottled water industry (in IL, maybe different elsewhere) is completely unregulated. She said that someone could bottle sewage water and sell it if they wanted to. I don't know why people assume that bottled water is 100% safe and tap water is so evil. Your bottled water is just someone else's tap water.

Back when I was growing up, my dad kept 5 or 6 glass gallon bottles of water in the basement, for emergencies. I have no idea what they did with those bottles once they sold their house, and I wonder what the quality of the water was inside of them, as they'd been there for as long as I could remember. So far as I know, they were never drained and refilled.

Of course, you can always do the same yourself, just make sure you put a few drops of chlorine bleach in the water, to keep it from growing anything. :hmm:

Water + Light = Bacteria ?

I am no chemist or scientist but imagine that should could start growing in the water that would explain it tasting like a dogs ass?

That or your dog did the carpet ass drag over your water bottle...D::hmm:.....:awe:

Bottled water is not chlorinated. It will go bad eventually and stuff will start growing in it because it is stagnant. Probably in a few years.

Bottled tap water that is chlorinated will last a few years longer.

Does anyone care that a "best if used by" date is NOT an expiration date?

On a side note, does anyone but ATOTers actually check those dates?

I always look at dates, but I'm a fan of reading containers anyway. Some dates mean more than others. I've eaten baked beans that expired 6 years previously. Milk products I pay closer attention to, but they always get a sight/smell test to determine if they've really gone off.
