got one of these before... interesting thing is that it's ata100... it is slower burst, but faster sustained, than my 250gb 16mb cache maxtor ata133...

and people complain about them being noisy, but i sure can't hear the thing over vid, cpu and psu fans...

I know Outpost has the Seagate 300GB on sale. However, look for posts in the last two months on the Seagate, as many people had overheating problems.

If that's true, would the WD2500JB be noisy too, or just the WD3000JB?

Once again, Rasputinj brings home the awesome.

1. Seagate's 300GB is A$$
2. Are you REALLY going need more than a 3yr warranty on your HD?

Yeah, but it makes me a little sad cuz when I pointed it out in the other thread no one really seemed to care. Next time I will make my own thread I guess

Oh, my last WD buy, a 320gb from newegg had a 3yr warranty - I didn't know they were doing less. I'd say 3yr is the ideal length for me, I can't imagine having the same drvie for 5yrs.

Greg. They do have 3 year warranties for OEM's. OEM have 3 year. Retailbox drives only have 1 year. They changed that a while ago. You can upgrade the warranty to get 3 years for like $25 or something but....

Thats part of the reason I dont like buying WD anymore. 1 year just doesnt cut it for me. Or at least when I do buy WD, its gotta be an OEM from an online site, because big retail stores dont carry oems. : /

nobody mentioned the 10 percent off/12 percent off best buy coupons floating around. I got it for 140.79 + tax, plus the additional $90 MIR, so just over $50 AR.

1) WD makes a better drive then slug gate.
2) rebate ... Slugs are faster then waiting 6 months for a seagate rabate... WD rabates come in a flash. Fastest rebates I've ever gotten.

I'd go with WD. I did buy a seagate, but I am going to ebay it and get the WD instead. I value my data too much for over heating issues and I hate waiting on rebates.

Have Fun!

I dont know what strange planet you live on that takes 6 months for rebates, but you have that backwards. WD rebates take 2-3 months. I would know, I buy 2 WD hd's every month. Seagate rebates come in a flash, 1 month tops. So no clue where you got those strange figures. I also buy about 4 of those each month......

I dont know why you think WD makes better drives than seagate either, Ive had more WD's die than seagates. Seagates have far better warranty. Lets see, 1 year or 5? Tough choice there............

And last, in terms of speed. They are pretty close. WD may be slightly faster. I admit that. However, its not like a WD blows it out of the water..... I use a raptor for boot drive anyways, as most people do. Seagates I use for storage/slaves. Also, there are these things called hard drive coolers that help with heat. My seagate never goes above 28-30C. My raptor(main drive) never goes above 30C either.

Probably just this series of seagates - seagate admitted to me on the phone that they are lemons. See my thread referenced earlier.

THey flat out said the drives were bad.

ModemPower, maybe if you get a frys rebate they are slow? Don't know really. All I know is it took a good damn long time for my seagate to come and WD rebate came within 2 weeks. Who knows. I guess the moral of the story is you will get it but you have to wait that is if it doesn't get lost in the mail. But so far so good.

Most drives fail because the computer was not a UPS ... So if you want your drives to last get a UPS that will filter out Brownout's and power flickers. Or a lot of times people throw perferctly good drives onto a CEHAP ass power supply that is already overloaded and it starts doing wierd things...

I don't really care about a warranty since.... if the drive fails and you didn't make a backup or even had a backup... well, your still gonna be mad and have to pay to send your drives back.... Hassel of filling out forms and making sure the RMA blah...blah...blah.... Usually a drive will last for 5 years. If it fails I don't want a reconditioned drive anyway. Might as well throw it away and buy a new one for 50 bucks...

My 2 cents...Still favor WD over Seagate tho!

Really? I've been doing some of the HDD deals w/ Seagate at Outpost.com and they are the fastest rebates I've been receiving. Usually 2-3 weeks which is awesome in my book.

How noisy is this compared to the Seagate 300 GB drives? There were some hints above but no direct comparisions. I've got one of the 300 GB 7200.8 in my PVR system and it is generating the most noise out of all the components.
