WD 74 Raptor SATA

I have one in an Antec P180 case. It is very fast, and I never hear it.
I'm not sure about all the discussion about HDD noise. I have a couple of Dell computers that sound like a wind tunnel. The case fan and the CD/DVD drives are extremely loud.
I don't think you will have any noise issues with a Raptor.
(I have the 74GB, by the way).

But there will not be 7200 rpm drive that will beat a 10,000rpm drive in seek time ever!

As for platter size and density obviously the bigger drives have an advantage.

so for game loading which tends to like like bigger platters and high density, the newer 7200 drives would do well. But with most things the raptor as still generally faster. And certainly feel faster when in use, from my personal experience.

Haven't u heard the saying newer isn't always better!

No harddrive is able to have a sustained read / write speed of more than 50-60MB/s anyway, so having 300MB/s is quite overkill except for very short bursts from cache. The latest large drives have good transfer speeds (a bit above a raptor I believe), but get their asses whopped in access times. It is quite simple logic that states that a 7200RPM drive cannot and will not exceed a good 10000RPM drive in access times.

don't quote me on this but I do believe the max sustained transfer rate and minimum is still higher on the raptors.

Raptors are crazy loud. I was visiting a friends house and walking into his computer room and I heard what I thought was motorcycle engine starting up. It was his raptor drive load a doom 3 level. Now he had the computer case was off and it right by the door but damn, it was louder then my dryer. The funny thing is he uses quiet fans and HS and the goes out anf gets this. If you notice sounds then skip this. You will know every time it working.

Yes, they are loud. They are also faster, but not fast enough to justify the price IMO.
