Hi all,

I had a site I built on GoDaddy for a few years but it got to be too expensive for what I wanted. Looking to build a new site now, nothing major mostly pictures of vacations and family stuff. Maybe a few videos. I have done a little research and found a few sites, wondering if anyone has heard or used any of these or have some good recommendations?

Here are a few I have been looking at:

webhostingpad.com
madgenius.com
1and1.com
justhost.com
fatcow.com

These seem to have fair rates and good reviews. Any help is greatly appreciated!!

Thanks,

Lothar

Mad Genius. A member here (ViviTheMage) runs it and it's solid. Good prices, good customer service.

Stay away from 1&1, stay far, far, far away.

Poor quality service, and they will not honor their money back promise.

It was sometime around 2006 I signed up for a basic 1&1 hosting account. They said if I prepaid 4 months, the service came with a money back guarantee. If I did not like the service and cancelled within the 4 months, I would get my money back.

6 years later I am still waiting on that refund.

If you're superlazy and have few requirements, just make a google Blogger site and buy your own domain name. You can add adsense easily, but sounds like your site is more personal.

If you need to customize a lot of stuff, then hostgator is the only one I've ever used and they aren't bad. Occasionally a bit slow using shared hosting.

Thanks for all the responses. Wondering how much space will I need? I plan on having 30-50 ish pictures per page. Maybe 15 - 25 pages. Maybe a small 5 minute video clip here and there (kids) . I see that Vivi's hosting has 2, 5 or 10 gigs of space. I had unlimited before, not actually sure what I was using or what I need.

I am extremely happy with HostGator. I am not sure the price of these other sites, but I pay around 6.50 a month.

I have one of the older HostGator plans and it suits me. But I mainly use HostGator because they're a local company and if I wasn't, I'd be using Mad Genius to support Vivi.

Gets my vote

son of a... vivi runs madgenius.com?? goddammit... i wish i'd known. i'm using bluehost.com...

Nothing wrong with bluehost from what i've read....ableit an unlimited company...someday we might do that, but from what we can tell people like having a specific set amount of space carved out for them. It's our niche, small as it is .

If space is an issue, I have been known to give AT'ers a little extra space at no cost.

It will tell you somewhere in their control panel (granted, it's hard to navigate). A picture could be 200k or >2MB, so you need to check.

That said, you should really just have a local copy of the whole website. Local drive space is too cheap to leave it scattered on your own stuff, so that you then need to go back and piece it together at some point when TSHTF.

If a small plan will work for now, ask if you can do an in-place upgrade to a larger plan (highly likely, but I don't know for sure).

I currently use hostgator which is pretty good, but I'm looking to sign up webhosting for 2 other sites, so I'll keep vivi in mind.

I'm confident Vivi will take good care of you.

There is another option which gives you significantly more bang for your buck but there are a few catches.

1) They're extremely popular and sell out within minutes of releasing inventory, currently they do have inventory for some packages.
2) It's completely unmanaged, only recommended for an experienced server admin or if you know someone who is.

A few benefits to a VPS vs traditional "shared" web hosting are:
1) root access
2) the ability to create reseller and unlimited shared hosting packages for your friends, family and co-workers. Your only limitation is your resources.

VPS for $25/yr offering:

128MB OpenVZ
128MB memory
256MB Burst
15GB Disk space
500GB/month BW on Gbit
1 x IPv4
16 x IPv6
OpenVZ / Stallion Panel

If you're willing to pay more, there are fully managed VPS providers with pretty cPanel and all the fixin's which starts around $35/mo.

yet another vote to stay far away from 1and1

I work for a hosting company (no, I wouldn't recommend us I mean, I love my company but we're more high-end and aren't really ideal for customers looking for cheap hosting) and checked them out just as the competition and thought everything about them was terrible.

after I cancelled, they actually called me at home trying to get me to come back.

We can always migrate you off .

Thanks Rossman! Another thing you can't forget with a VPS is you need to get a control panel to make things easier on you...something like cPanel or Direct Admin which cost 10-15$ per month in of itself. OR you can get a free alternative which tend to work OK.

hostpc.com I think there's a guy on ATOT who promotes it too.
