Wedding Gifts Off the registry?

Going to a wedding this weekend and in my procrastination never got a gift for the bride/groom. So i called up the bridesmaid and got the wedding registry info and looked it up online and practically everything is taken! all thats left is a pot, a spoon, and a $500 device that appears to cook monkeys.
So that being said whats the next appropriate thing to get the happy couple? Last time i went to a wedding i got something half assed off the registry but cost $80 and they ended up getting separated less than a month later so i dont want to spend too much $$$ either.

Cash.

It is not tacky.

It'll be more appreciated than you could imagine.

Getting married in October and to be honest the fiancee and I could use money much more than anything else we've listed on our registry, it's just considered tacky to ask for cash, but not to receive cash from what we've read on theknot.com

what about a nice engraved frame with their names and date?
you can go to Things Remembered and get it done in a few minutes.
Its thoughtful and something they can then use to display a wedding photo.

I second the cash or gift card idea. My wife put crazy stuff on our registry and so we ended up not getting much from it (rubbermaid containers?!?!?!) But we did end up with a bunch of cash and gift cards which was waaaay more appreciated anyways.

True, I was just talking with someone yesterday about this. I'm sure most newlyweds could use cash and would appreciate it.

My wife and I loved ALL the cash.

We did get a lot of off-registry items that got regifted/donated. Every one has different tastes but we would rather have money than an engraved frame that may or may not compliment a couple's style/tastes; it's just a lot safer to give green.

I take lots and lots of photos, so I framed a few and gave it to them. I used a nice, but inexpensive frame, if they want to change it. Sometimes its the thought that counts the most!

Lokiju is right, cash is the best way to go here. Even when I get someone a gift for the wedding, I include some cash, too. I'm getting married in April and I know we would certainly appreciate that.

You are correct, however i know some people would rather give a small gift than just putting a $20 in a card for the couple.

We loved and needed all the cash we got as well, but you cannot go wrong with a simple, classic sliver frame. just my .02

$25 gift card ftw

Gift cards and cash were extremely appreciated when we got married last year. Getting married is expensive and you can end up getting a lot of junk that you'll never use and can't return. I still have like 3 sets of cups that I'll never use lol.

Also cash is a very traditional wedding gift. Almost all cultures give wads of money to the bride and groom on the wedding day.

Simple and classic is great but knowing some of my relatives it would turn in to an overly-ornate/gawdy/30"x15" monstrocity that we would have to set out everytime the particular relative came over.

Cash, totally! And slip it from your inside coat pocket to the groom's in a white envelope, all shady-like...just so you can feel like a mafioso!
