Easter Bunny was here and brought some stats! Enjoy! :-D

Hm, our Folding@Home crew has put in another strong workweek, now ranking 6th for weekly production. Oh, and we are 1st for the week at Gaia@Home and at Private GFN Server. And @Icecold is a #1 team on his own at QuChemPedIA in the Ukraine stats.

@Endgame124 , I have been playing around with undervolting GPUs. A bit of a learning curve, but running 80% or less TDP, you can really gain back some frequency and run a lot less watts!

You need to try and catch up as the Pent is coming up!!!!

I am going to bring on-the-line (google-ish movie reference), old junk for the Pent. Likely be worth a 1/2 mill? of something

And other new/old junk soon! We should all start a Pent shaming TeAm thread? So many old laptops sitting around waiting to be born again and have a 1/24th life?...

I fear spiders though, based upon my last few years of old laptop experience. And it really takes time to find power cords for stuff!

Besides building my own plywood case /es in the future... Commercial cases are getting much better for cooling and airflow or the other it seems? More airflow and / x / filtration is better!!!

I am designing, but not moving forward yet about building a pre-filtered / DC box. About 3 foot wide (1 miter or so for the milterharies / hairiticks...) and whatever length. I like the idea of puters with fans that have pre-filtration air? I have animals, and they are so hairy!!!!!!

In my experience with taking laptops apart. Be a little bit aggressive with pulling the bottom half and top half apart in most cases. What model laptop do you have? I'm sure there is a tutorial online somewhere showing the steps, but usually it's taking all the screws out of the bottom and sometimes there will be a couple screw hidden behind detachable panels on the top or after taking the screws out the bottom the keyboard comes off to reveal more screws. Once all the screws are apart, this is where the slightly aggressive approach comes into place because the two halves usually snap together with tabs and are sometimes rather difficult to detach. They make tools that make it easier, but I find using an old credit card (one of the good ones, not a cheap flimsy one) helps separate the two.

Once that's done; it's generally self explanatory on how to get the heatsinks off.

Additionally, have you tried just using a vacuum and canned air (compressed air) to just blow into the heatsink vents to clear the dust/debris? 9/10 this is why they over heat because those vents get blocked.

Apart from more or less well hidden screws and tabs, there is also the issue of various flimsy cable connections which need to be detached and reattached...

However, now that you pointed it out I found a seemingly very well made disassembly + reassembly video of almost the same laptop model. (I have got a Lenovo W540, video is for W541.) Should be doable!

Looks like a sizable increase of my total CPU power is in my near future. ;-)

I tried canned air but this didn't improve things.

With those ribbon cables keep in mind that some of them have clips that secure the cable to the connector. So you can't just pull them out or else it'll break the clips. However, even with the clips broken the cable will still plug in and stay mostly secure (I've never had one come out)

You could always borrow @Icecold hotglue gun if you break them to make sure the ribbon cable stays put though.

Actually seeing how these clips work, in this mentioned video for the respective generation of laptops, made me more confident about the procedure. I never dealt with this type of connections before.

I skimmed over a similar video. Removing the keyboard on the W541 is a method I've not come across yet. Interesting way to hide the screws. Not sure I would have easily (or even at all) figured that out on my own.
