Hi all,

that's a lot of Amicable Numbers during past week! And a Gerasim spike too. Also, perhaps I am mistaken, but it seems to me that a few more people than usual switched their favorite project recently. Maybe because spring is in the air? (In some parts of this little world.)

BTW, I had been heating my home with 2…4 computers during the past months, depending on the weather. (Epycs at cTDP_low, and sometimes Xeons without turbo; i.e. all running in sorts of eco mode.) I am just about to switch down to a single heating computer now, not counting an old 4-core desktop computer. Looks like I won't get a lot done this year.

In order to get more results out of the Wattage which my home is cooling away without extra ventilation, I should really look into adding some newer hardware. But I just don't have the spare time right now.

Have you considered using something like a grow tent to house the systems and using the exhaust vents to exhaust the hot air directly out the window?

It's with my understanding that you don't have AC (Like I think most European households) so it wouldn't really cause a strain on an AC system if it's not there or even being used. You could build some sort of setup similar to a grow tent that collects all the hot air and expels it directly outside. Although with the hotter than usual ambient temps you might have to do some redoing on the cooling solutions for the systems.

One of the guys on my old team had ~50+ GPUs in around 6 or 7 GPU systems. He ended up positioning them where the exhaust of them went directly outside. He used some mining type 4U cases. So it pulled ambient temps in from the front and expelled the hot temps directly outside. His setup wasn't all that complex. He literally just put them on a table in front of a window, so each system's rear was butted up against the open window and all the hot air they produced just went outside.

I've got a setup which is halfway there towards what you describe.

But my current issue is not about avoiding heat in the flat, but about keeping heating costs in check. I am paying € 0,58 per kWh now, € 0,50 per kWh starting next month. (I could use the natural gas based central heating and pay less per kWh then, but this wouldn't get any science done. Also, natural gas is not renewable.)

It's not only the high electricity price itself which turns me off. Adding insult to injury, on top of it goes that the primary justification of this price is that the big providers have a unique chance to rip everybody off (more so than they did before) due to regulations in their favor, so that's what they do. – Edit: The pseudo market for electricity is rigged such that small providers cannot effectively undercut the big players by offering fair prices.

I am not a home owner, hence can't go solar myself, or something along these lines.

Yeah I am in the same boat as you, except I got cheap electricity; for now.

I have a corner flat with windows on two of the walls in the same room and in the adjacent room there are two balcony doors that is on the same wall as on the other room. My flat is a square, like most, that's divided into 4 sections. I basically have the doors, well just one door, closed in one of the rooms so it forces the air circulation to go from one room up to the next, then over to the other half, then down and out the balcony doors. So air circulation to push cooler outside air in and warmer outside air out across the whole flat is doable. The issue I face is when it's really cold outside, the intake air is in my bedroom. So if it's 30F (basically 0C) outside then my room can drop to the low 40Fs or high 30Fs really quickly while the rest of the flat can be in the lower 60s. I wish I had a way to automate the fan speed based on the temperature, but I just have to manually control them when I am home.

One of these days I'll buy a house. One of these days...
