Welcome again to the weekly DC stats.

For the MilkyWay@Home minded among us: This time we are in 2nd for the week according to FreeDC, with our 257,402,284 points vs. GridCoin's 257,439,081 points. Though BoincStats wrapped up the week at a different time, arriving at 261,047,438 for us and 259,060,900 for them. :-)

We happened to come out at as top team at Denis, Gaia, Gerasim (medical, astro, math) for the past week.

That's my fault. One of my MW rigs crashed while I was out of town. Had to remote in, reboot it, and restart BOINC.

The 7950X3D won't be on my wish list. One CCD has the 3Dvcache but the other doesn't. For DC It's a crippled chip IMO.

From what I have read, AMD has a driver fix that essentially make this chip like a 7800x3d + a 7800x. I want to see how it does in tasks that require big cache. Can you name some for me to test ?

Other than some of the Primegrid LLR sub-projects, I don't know of any other project applications that would benefit from a big L3 cache. Some were thinking the Microbiome Immunity Project (WCG) would benefit from a big cache but that project has been completed. Other projects might benefit but they would have to be tested.

EDIT: The WCG MIB project used Rosetta so perhaps the latter might benefit from a big L3 cache.

While several PrimeGrid CPU subprojects are cache-demanding, all of the PrimeGrid CPU projects (LLR based and Genefer based) work well in the 32 MB cache which non-3D Zen 3 and Zen 4 core complexes (CCX) have. Performance of these projects suffer if their multithreaded tasks are spread over CCX boundaries, but 3D cache won't help with this problem.

One could use 3D cache to run more of such PrimeGrid tasks per CCX simultaneously, using fewer threads per task which would decrease the thread synchronization overhead a little. But this would increase the already long task durations even more, when fewer cores work on a given task. LLR, and even more so Genefer, scale quite well to 8 threads per task, which would saturate all cores of a Zen 3–4 CCX.

Projects which might potentially profit from the large 3D cache are those with large memory footprint. These come to my mind:

climateprediction.net — First observations which were posted in their message board claim that the memory access patterns of either the old 32bit tasks or the new 64bit tasks are _not_ benefitting from 3D cache. But nobody came up with a rigorous benchmark yet, AFAIK. (I haven't visited the message board more recently.)
Rosetta@home indeed — This may be hard to test properly. Perhaps set up two boinc-client instances on a 7950X3D, each one using 49% of the logical CPUs ( = fitting into one CCX and leaving one spare thread for non-BOINC work) and being bound to one CCX each using taskset. Then run this for several days and compare the points generated by the instance with 3D cache vs. the instance without 3D cache.
A test like this, with random tasks, needs to be run for some time because Rosetta@home issues work in which molecules of varying sizes are simulated.
I would like to implement a Rosetta@home benchmark with fixed workload, similar to my LLR and Genefer benchmarks, but one of the issues which held me back are the large input data files for Rosetta@home.

Some LHC@home projects perhaps.

Perhaps 3D cache helps when you run a GPU application (tied to the CCX which does have 3D cache) and cache-intensive CPU applications simultaneously.
