I did a search but could not find anything like this problem. If I missed it, please do not flame. I did look.
I purchased a PowerColor 9800SE 128MB/256 bit card with the hopes of soft-modding it to a 9800 Pro, based on the discussions I've read here and elsewhere. I'm having a problem, which does not seem to be typical. My understanding is that when the mod fails to work, the result is artifacts in the graphics. I am using an AMD 3200 64 with an ASUS K8v motherboard and XP. The card works fine with standard ATI drivers. The card does benchmarks and plays games. I then installed the softmod drivers. Everything installed fine and boots great with no problems. ATI tool says I have the 8 pipelines activated. As long as I do mundane tasks like word processing, it works great with no visible artifacts on the screen. However if I use ATI tool to test things or play Farcry the monitor just goes black and stays black and the computer freezes. I have to reboot to get it started again. .
I am not overclocking the card at all. It is completely stock including the fan but it can't be overheating as it happens only when I try to go into a game or do benchmarks and then the screen goes black instantly. The card has no time to heat up. The card works fine when I reboot even with the softmod until I try to do benchmarks again or play games And I can reinstall the standard ATI drivers with no problem. The card then does benchmarks and plays games.
Any ideas? Or is this just one the cards that will not softmod right?
