Weird DiVX problems

I have a strange problem playing divx files. In spite of the fact that I have the latest codec and all the nesecarry (spelling! ) stuff, I continue getting this really strange problem:

I'll be playing a divx file in microsoft media player (not 7, 6.4). The file will be playing normally- sound is in sync with video etc, when suddenly the video will stop playing, but the sound will keep going. My computer continues working normally- its not a lockup or anything. I'll advance the track a little, and the video will catch up with the sound again, and it'll play normally for a while more, before this will happen again. It always happens at the same space on the track. At first I thought these could be corrupted files, but I've downloaded several of them, and they all share this same problem. However, all the files are from one friend- is it possible hes encoding them incorrectly? If this is the case, how can he fix it?

hi, there, maybe it will be better after you update the DirectX (DirectX 7.0a) and DXMedia (DirectX Media 6.0), you can get it from microsoft or: http://cine1.webjump.com/select install guide you will be able to read some information.

A corrupted file will can also cause this problem.

Also, I once had a DVD disk that does the same. On a particular scene, the video will stop moving yet the sound continue until it lock up. If I advance the frame immediately or bypass the scene, the DVD play until the end of the movie. I returned the disk, got another one and problem went away.

ISOs, that sound like the problem that I'm having- except its with divx. Heres what I tried to do:

I stripped the sound into a seperate .wav file, and then converted the divx into a mpeg, using the .wav for the sounds. It no longer stops playing, but the sound is out of sync, which is REALLY whacky, since doing it this way always syncs the sound.


Any other ideas?

you got your problem solved or not yet/ maybe you can try install : MPEG4 Video Codec, which you can find from: http://divx.ctw.cc/...hope this will work for you

This site explains the problem you're having in detail. Its not too uncommon in divx movies.

Lerouge, I wouldn't be able to run DIVX files without that codec, but thanks anyway

Blarg! Not much I can do unless the guy feels like splitting and fixing those files, and I don't think he has time to. *sigh* Oh well.

One more question while I'm at it:
I know the purpose of keyframes. Currently some of the vids I'm watching are 1 keyframe/10 seconds. How much bigger would it make the file if it were 1 keyframe/5 seconds? It seems like corruption is inescable, and more keyframes would make that corruption last for a shorter time (if I've got this thing figured out
