Hey everyone. I’m rebuilding my computer and I’m having a strange issue with it. It won’t turn on at all when the cooler is seated on the processor. I have an AMD FX 9590 processor, an Asus M5A78L mobo, and a Scythe Katana 4 cooler. It doesn’t matter if the cooler is plugged in or not, if it’s sitting on top of the CPU it won’t power up at all. Not a blip, no lights, it’s just a brick. Any ideas what in the world could be causing this and how to fix it?

Are all the stand offs installed correctly on the mb?

Is it pushing hard on one or more of the RAM sticks? I had that problem with this Lenovo M82 SFF rig, it has four DDR3 DIMM sockets, but when I filled all four with GSKill 4x2GB DDR3 sticks from a kit, the sideways pressure from the CPU heatsink, wouldn't allow the DIMM to seat properly. The OEM system was designed for RAM that was thinner, without heatsinks/heat-spreaders. So I compromised. I used the original two "naked" DIMMs, in the closest slot and the third slot, and then I populated the other two with the GSKill RAM that I had. Thankfully, they were all compatible, AFAIK.

It wouldn't boot when the RAM stick was getting "squeezed" from the side.

Nope I only have one Ram stick in there and it’s nowhere near the processor and heatsink

if you're having the same issue with two different mb and cpu, it's a problem with assembly. The wrong header being used for the cooler perhaps?

I don’t think so. It doesn’t boot even if the heat sink isn’t plugged in. This is why I’m so stumped. If the heat sink is sitting on top of the CPU the machine will not boot. I’ve unplugged everything but one stick of ram, the plug to power the mobo and CPU, and the header that operates the power switch and it won’t boot. If I unplug the CPU it’ll boot, if I remove the heatsink from the CPU and plug the CPU back in, it’ll boot. It’s confusing as all get out, but I really need to get this thing up and running.

It won't boot if there's nothing plugged into the header. You said if you unplug the CPU, it will boot. I'm having trouble understanding what you mean because without a CPU, it absolutely will NOT boot.

Sorry, I meant power on. If the heatsink is on the CPU and you hit the power button, it doesn’t power on if the CPU is plugged in. Unplug the CPU with the heatsink on it, I get lights and spinning fans. If I remove the heatsink from the CPU and plug the CPU back in, it will power on. I’m trying to figure out what about this heatsink physically sitting on top of the CPU prevents the computer from turning on when the CPU is plugged in.
