I've had this issue for about a year and I've finally decided to get to the bottom of it.
Short story: whenever I boot my PC from a cold start, i.e. press power switch as opposed to reset from running, it hangs on the XP splash screen after the progress bar cycles for a little while.
Thus every time I shut my PC down all the way to tinker inside or the power goes off in the house, I have to press the power button, let it hang, then press the reset button and it starts fine.
I've added the /sos switch to my XP boot.ini. I thought I would see a device driver being loaded as the last thing before the hang occurs, but that's not the case. The system ACTUALLY hangs on the processor ID screen that comes up AFTER the white-on-black device driver list when using /sos. I'm talking about the blue screen that shows the Windows build version, the amount of memory, and the number of processors, with some Windows graphics and white text.
This issue has persisted after complete formats and reinstalls of Windows, using different XP discs.
Here's my system specs:
P5B Deluxe non-wifi 1215 BIOS
E6400
2x1GB Patriot DDR2-6400 4-4-4-12
EVGA 7900GTX with most recent Nvidia WHQL driver
74GB Raptor as boot drive and 250GB Seagate 7200.9
Sound Blaster Audigy 2
Two Dell 2007WFP in 1680x1050 DualView
What am I missing? I'm trying to get Windows to spit out a boot log when it hangs, but I haven't succeeded so far.
