Yeah I'm seriously starting to consider off grid, but I read that you still have to be connected or they consider the house as abandoned, and you are basically trespassing. Pisses me off how they can extort us this way. Even if you don't use the service, just having it will cost like $100/mo in fixed fees. If you don't use enough or none at all, they just charge you more for delivery. But at $270/mo now being my regular bill, solar is really looking like an option, it's just the days are so short for the majority of the year so I need more than just solar if I want to rely on my own power 100% of the time. Taking snow off the panels every morning is only half the battle. Been reading up on gasification wood stoves too, you can get a genset that runs off the gases that it produces. But then that's getting into noise bylaws and other political BS. No matter what you try to do to increase your quality of life, there's always the government to get in the way.
I need to measure my roof some time and figure out how much kw I could fit. Will give me an idea of how feasible it is. According to a random online calculator and 5 days of sun per day I need about 8kw.
