With the recent price hikes my new equal billing plan is now $270/mo. I'm actually considered "urban high density" so it's crazy to think some people get screwed even more.

Our liberal provincial government is corrupt, that's pretty much the reason. It's just professional to not say it, I guess.

Seriously, one year they did a hike just because we did not use enough, even though at other times they made a hike because we used too much. They just spew out whatever excuses they feel like at the time. Then there's the fact that they keep building more generating stations and then selling the excess to the states at a loss.

It is what happens when cheap reliable power is retired and replaced by expensive, intermittent power. You end up still needing the cheap power to cover for the intermittent so you pay more than otherwise. But on the good side you are saving the environment for yourselves and everyone else doing what your government is doing.

That part's hilarious: conserve like we told you and "made" you do with smart meters? Well, fuck you, now we need more money so your rates go up, and if you try to use even less, fuck you, again.

Too bad I'm in the city and don't live in a bungalow... and we barely get any sun for half the year. Otherwise, I'd go off-grid.

Yeah I'm seriously starting to consider off grid, but I read that you still have to be connected or they consider the house as abandoned, and you are basically trespassing. Pisses me off how they can extort us this way. Even if you don't use the service, just having it will cost like $100/mo in fixed fees. If you don't use enough or none at all, they just charge you more for delivery. But at $270/mo now being my regular bill, solar is really looking like an option, it's just the days are so short for the majority of the year so I need more than just solar if I want to rely on my own power 100% of the time. Taking snow off the panels every morning is only half the battle. Been reading up on gasification wood stoves too, you can get a genset that runs off the gases that it produces. But then that's getting into noise bylaws and other political BS. No matter what you try to do to increase your quality of life, there's always the government to get in the way.

I need to measure my roof some time and figure out how much kw I could fit. Will give me an idea of how feasible it is. According to a random online calculator and 5 days of sun per day I need about 8kw.

Check out the film Enron: The Smartest Guys In The Room for what Enron did to California. They basically called up power plants and told them to shut down in order to raise electric rates causing blackouts to make a profit.

water usage here usage plus delivery x 110 percent equals sewage add it all together for 190 dollar water bills every 2 months.

zero usage nets you 150 dollars just to pay for the pleasure

That's probably in a truly rural area though. From what I've heard on multiple occasions, you can't do that in the city. Of course it's something I'd have to inform myself of, probably depends on the area. There may even be a loophole, like I might be able to start a private utility company and be the only customer, or something.

That said, if I did not have to work, I would move in a rural lake front area in a heart beat and live off grid. Only thing I'd want is internet, but I could settle for satellite if I really had to. If I won the lotto I'd just look into what it would take to run fibre.
