Are these hard drives any good?? because I saw an 80.0GB 7200rpm, ATA100, 9ms, 2M Caviar for $315 canadian, this is only about $35 more than the maxtor DiamondMax Plus 60.0G 7200rpm, ATA100. SO I was thinking that maybe it would be better to get the extra 20 gigs, does anyone know if western digital makes good hard drives??

I dont know about western Digital's drives now, but their old ones (4-15gb or so) were horrible, i had a 6 gig drive that i ended up RMAing like 5 times. After that i wont ever buy another.

I've got 3 WD 20GB drives. Had then for 5 months now, no probelms. I also have a 13 GB drive that I've had for about 2 years. Also working fine.

I think WD's are good drives.

I use Western Digital, I hear a lot of horror stories, but I think WD just ran into a bad batch, like IBM did with the 75GX or whatever the ID is. I have a 13 Gig I've been using for about 2 years now and I have a 40 gig I've been using for close to a year, no problems. I had to RMA one earlier, but I've been using WD for about 5 years and I've only had to RMA one drive. I like them, but keep researching them.

I don't think so. Maxtor and Western Digital are two separate companies and fighting hard for your business. Maxtor did buy out another large company recently, but I think it was Seagate not Western Digital. As for the original question, I have used and worked with several Wetern Digital drives over the years and most of them have worked for years without any problems. I have four 40 Gb ones in two RAID 1 configurations for one of my business clients. He does taxes so his data is very important. I haven't had any problems with them and he runs the PCs 24/7.

What are you talking about? No, they didn't.

As for what I think of the drives - they're really reliable and fast. However, I wish they had more cache. Maxtor and IBM give you 2 MB, my WDs have only 128k.

Any Western Digital I've ever bought is still running just fine, never had one go out yet. Are they the fastest or quietest, no they aren't. Are they reliable, yes. With a 3 year warranty it's a good buy.

Maxtor bought out Quantum.

Western Digital drives are not the greatest drives right now I just RMA'd a 20GB for a customer. I also know of someone who had six (yes "6&quot 45 GB WD drives die within six months, in fact I think 4 were DOA. Go with the Maxtor.

I have a 4.3 GB WD hard drive that is almost 2 years old now; the box it's in has been running 24/7 for the last 365 or so, and the drive is still in excellent condition (no bad sectors).

My WD 13.6 HDD just fried the other day after 1yr. 8months. The tech support in Minnesota for (EIDE) drives sucks. I have been trying to get an RMA number from them for a week and their servers have been down(internal network) and they have'nt been able to do anything for me. I guess I will have to resort to web based RMA even though it takes three times the wait to get your drive back. Also, these drives are usually very loud compared to other drives on the market. Personally, I would go for Maxtor since IBM is about in the same boat(as far as tech support and quality go). Steer clear of WD!!!!!!!!!!

I've heard horror stories about WD hard drives, both in print and in person. A friend of mine had to RMA his WD drive awhile back, since it went totally FUBAR.

For my part, I've been using a little 4.3-GB IBM DeskStar for almost 4 1/2 years now, and it works as well as the day it was new. I've also been pounding on two different Maxtor drives (a 17-GB DiamondMax and the excellent 40-GB DiamondMax Plus) for months and months now, without a single complaint from either.

As you can surmise, I recommend Maxtor and IBM rather highly.

I've got a 10 gig that's 2.5 years old.
And a 20 gig that's 6 months old.
Never had a problem with either of them.

I have three WD drives. A 6.4, 13.6, and a 20 gig. The 6.4 is the oldest. I had to replace it about 9 months after I got it. Since then, it has been running 24/7 for 4 years now, and not a problem with it. The other two are less then a year old, and still going strong.
My sister in law wanted me to put a Fujitsu into a computer for her, and nothing but problems from the get-go. She ended up in replacing three of them in less then 6 months.

The WD models have 2 megs of cache just like Maxtore and IBM. Their current drives are the fastest IDE drives out there and have been leading the capacity race until the just recent 40 gig platters of a few companies.

I don't think that I have ever read a forum on hardware where one person doesn't say black and the other says white. You are going to have to make up your own mind through expierience like everyone else. Just make sure you back everything up regularly all the time and you'll be OK. My WD has a 3 year guarantee on the box.

Edit: Hee Hee Hee....it's printed on the box, the box itself is not under warranty.....what a maroon.

I had no problems with the WD 400BB (I think it was) 40GB ATA100 7200RPM drive. I had a 15 and 20 gigger before that one...again no problems at all.

Moved to the DiamondMax Plus60 just because it had better seek time.

Some of you guys dont see the whole picture when it comes to HD's... For example:

My XYZ brand HD has given me X years reliable service, OR:

My XYZ brand HD has been RMA'ed X times in X months!

The fact lies with OEMs - When you can save lets hypothetically say $3 per HD in a quantity of 1000 then that adds up to a $3000 dollar saving. You have to figure out (usually on past history as MTBF numbers mean virtually nothing) how many more of these drives will return in systems, and the total cost of repair including shipping, handling, downtime and the actual repair itself. Stating that your HD (whatever brand it may be) is more reliable than another is foolish because how many of those drives have been actually shipped and what percentage is your one drive out of all the drives in the world, get a clue people!!

Yes, we are a large shipper of PC's in Australia (depending on contract, between 100-1000 per month), we aren't a name brand (Compaq, Dell, HP, IBM etc etc etc) however a clone manufacturer and like to get our stuff right.

WE choose Seagate IDE for all workstations based on OUR internal reliability analasis and we often choose Quantum or Seagate for SCSI servers. We occasionally choose IBM drives above seagates if specifically requested, we usually refrain because of the substantial additional cost (we are talking numbers here!) unless requested on the purchase order.

Cheers
