OK then, I will give my reasons for choosing Seagate.
I've owned several Seagate drives and have yet to have a single one fail (knock on wood).
I've owned a few WD drives and have yet to have one fail.
However, in my experience, the Seagate drives have run cooler and quieter. That may not be the case with the newer WD drives.
Chances are you'll be happy with either one, but I personally feel more comfortable with Seagate's standard 5-yr warranty. The only WD drive I own at the moment is my Raptor, and that's because it came with a 5-yr warranty.
If I had a choice between the 320GB Seagate and a 320GB WD, even if the WD was a bit faster in benches I personally would pick the Seagate because of the warranty.
Sorry, I didn't mean to speak for anyone else here.
It's been a lil bit difference experience for me.
I have owned a couple WD hard drives and none have failed. However, my current one(120 gig 8MB cache) runs with a bit of a high pitch tone to it(Think like a CRT TV that is running) which is annoying.
I have owned 2 Seagates. Unfortunately, I only bought one. I got the Seagate at christmas and installed it that day. I made it my multimedia drive and transferred my pictures+music from my WD drive to the Seagate. All was good.
Then a month later I am at college and all of a sudden my computer sounds like a vacuum cleaner. I said "WTF" and proceded to shut it off. Trying to figure out what it was I turned it back on sitting close to the case. It started up again and the sound was gone. Not knowing whether it was a fan or something else I let it go. A few short minutes later, the vacuum cleaner sound was back. I turn off my computer this time after confirming it was the hard drive. Fearing for my important data, I turned back on my computer to back up the data. No more boot. In order to boot I had to disconnect the hard drive.
To sum it up, my data was lost. School projects, pictures, music...everything. I did not expect this out of a new drive less than 1 month old.
I called up seagate as having a fully functional computer was important to me at school. Their "customer service" I had heard so many good things about failed to impress me. It was your standard "dell service". AKA I can't understand a word your saying. I had to request to speak to management just to get a drive sent out within a few days to replace mine. Having to do that was unacceptable IMO and really makes me think less of their warranty.
Yes, I did get a new drive and it is currently working. However, it does occasionally make a loud "CLICK" which scares me. But its been doing it since I got the drive and all the drive tests I have ran have come up clean.
This is just my one experience and YRMV but I am wary about buying another Seagate drive which is a real shame.
