When I use the dianostic program from Western website to check my hdd, I got this message 'Drive is locked. Error/Status code 0220'. What does it mean?

From WD:

Security feature of the drive reports locked status. Some vendors use the security feature to ensure the usage of only specific drives in their system, or the drive may have been locked by a user using a third party utility to enable this feature. The same utility and the original code used to lock the drive are necessary to unlock this drive. Please contact the system vendor for the above-mentioned information.

- There's no list on the helpfile nor the website.

montag
- It's a desktop hdd

daniel
- The problem is similar but unfortunately yoe didn't got the solution as well

Slik
- The pc is a diy unit & I didn't use any utility to lock the hdd

Seems there's no solution to this problem as according to the thread provide by daniel, even WD don't support this problem when they know their drive has this kind of problem.

well i saw 2 possabilities discussed on there one was
1)
freezing and one was

2)
See if the utility program found in the following thread on the TiVo
Underground forum of the TiVo community forum.

http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=148629

If that utility does not work it appears that the drive can be
permanently locked. If this is the case then the only way to rescue
the data would be to swap the circuit board with one from an identical
drive and back up the data immediatly. This is not a terribly easy
procedure if you are not comfortable with electronics.

admit they both sound like desperate measures and you take chance of loosing all data
will keep looking and maybe this bump will get you an answer from someone

You told Jack there's no list on the website. Where do you think I got my info from?

Western Digital Diagnostic Error Codes List!

Secondly, why exactly are you using the WD Diagnostics on it? Is there a problem you're having?

Are you trying to use the diagnostics through Windows? I wouldn't be surprised to see a "locked" error if you're using XP, as XP often will not allow actual hardware level device access as a security measure.

Always provide more information. Is the drive acting up in some way?

Have you tried other companies' Hard Drive diagnostics?

Can you access your files? Is the drive new?

Have you done an antivirus check? Don't just rely on whatever AV you have; try different ones. Go to the free Housecall virus scan site that does it right over the web via your browser: http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

What model drive is it? Not just size, the actual model number.

There's a lot you need to fill us in on. Please elaborate on the above.

And again, what is prompting you to even check the drive's status via diagnostics?

If you know how to burn an "ISO" Cd, you should get the "Ultimate Boot CD". It's absolutely free, and has tons of utilities on it in an easy menu. Once you burn the iso file (burn it using the ISO format in your burning software), you can put the CD in your drive and boot up your pc with it. This assumes you have your boot order in the bios set to boot from CD first.

You'll see the menu right away. There's a Hard Disk Tools menu option. Go there, and you'll see about 5 or 6 different hard disk diagnostics programs.

Steve Gibson has an excellent Hard Disk Diagnostic and repair tool called Spinrite 6.
It's not cheap, about 89 bucks or so, but an awesome tool to have.

Probably the best drive utility out there. There's a 6 minute video you can watch that explains how it works.

Put ZAP on a boot disk and try that; it might just error out though due to the lock. Be sure to use it on the right disk; it works fast, like "zap 0, Enter, done" - as fast as you can read that.
I'm not too familiar with hard drive lockouts though. DBAN maybe to do a zero-write?
