@ erok55 that mobo and memory look good. that's a total of $240ish.

that still leaves around $260 for a cpu. you might want to look at getting a 3200+ and you'd still have money left over.

I recommend (this is based on MAximum PC magazine) getting SLI motherboard and SLI compatible video card to allow for future upgradability, although there is a price premium for SLI mobo , and also currently Nvidia's SLI compatible video cards are not as a good a value as the X800XL. But I think the SLI option is still worth it (again - if anyone has a problem with that - go to Maximum PC the kickass magazine from which these recomendations are derived).

AMD 3200 Winchester core with .90die $190, abit AV8 $110, ocz enhance latency 521x2=1gig $175 and after shipping and handling your right at $500 and youll be set. This assuming youre using an AGP vid card. If you have a Pci-E card then the mobo should be the AX8 and its the same price as the other. DONT go with off brand or the cheapest parts, think of your pc like a car, you can always find cheap parts, but like anything else you get what you pay for, pending latest state of the art cheaper to manufacture items, but on 500 budget dont worry bout that. The items ive listed will do you very well and the makers have excellent reputations, warrantees and customer support. Believe me its better to spend a bit more on getting good ram and not the value ram even though its more than the processor, and on the 939 socket, youll be able to upgrade that cpu easily for years to come without needing to tear everthing apart again to replace the mobo.

sorry i dont buy into euro made motherboards ie DFI. Americans design the best cpu's and ram where as the Taiwanese (is that the right term?) form Taiwan make the best motherboards and Abit is the least expensive of the top 3 Asus>MSI>Abit>all the rest.

yeah, except that when you pay $175 for the the 1GB OCZ memory, you get virtually nothing more than the $75 corsair value ram - cpu and all other components will run exactly the saem, only the ram will be a little slower - but it will have negligible effect (less the 1%) on system performance. So better save the $100 and spend it on a better video card, or sound card (audigy2 zs will not only give you much higher sound quality and special effect but will also increase your gaming frame rate by 10-15%).

So final list is:

DFI Ultra/SLI - D mobo
Athlon 64 3000+ (only venice not winchester - difference is 15% more overclocking, costs almost the same)
1GB Corsair Value select PC3200
Audigy 2 ZS Soundcard

Video card: ATI X800XL (non-sli) / Nvidia 6800GT (sli setup)

This is guranteed to give you the most performance for this amount of money (especially the non sli option which is cheapest but has more limited upgradability).

or you can buy my mobo cpu ram and vid card im looking to spend stupid amounts of cash to upgrade and you can capitalize on my enthusiests retardation. the parts are as follow AMD 3400 Clawhammer 2.2Ghz 800 FSB 1mb cache, this is the older and better model of the 3400 retails for $275, Asus K8n-E deluxe Motherboard( top of the line 754socket amd64 motherboard), Corsair Value select pc3200 DDR400 1gig 2x512 sticks(like above recomended) and an ATI X800 Pro vid card. You or whoever else would be able to kick some butt with this set up. Ill give all of it too you for $500 or whoever else would be interested, package deal though, all in one. $500 is a steal but ill take it to dump it all at once. im me on yahoo newmenu2 or aim as newmenu2 Ive been using this system for 3 months bug free but have had alot of money come my way via taxes and would like to sell this rig asap

I say 1gb of gskill value ram at newegg for like 110.00

Will you be ocing?? If so no point in wasting moeny on a 3500+ if the 3000+ can potentially hit same ceiling. Also if ocing then wait for venice cores to arrive.

Also reports are dual core desktops may arrive sooner now...May actually be the first time I can actually agree with the "just wait" comment...

Ofcourse that leads to the other question....Gaming PC???

If you even think you want to jump to dual core sooner after their release do not even think of a sckt754...

and btw if anyone needed any more proof that memory overclocking is WORTHLESS for gaming performance look at a new article today on Anandtch:

http://anandtech.com/memory/showdoc.aspx?i=2390

the highlight is - if the CPU speed is kept constant at 2.4GHz, but memory is changed from DDR400 2-2-2-5 to DDR533 3-4-4-8 the performance increases by 1-2% only. For example, in Enemy Territory game you get 114.5 fps at DDR400, and 115.8 at DDR533. Now figure it out for yourself if this is worth an extra $150.

This is very true, ram is severely overrated on this forum.

Which memory do you expect to be faster? All that shows is tighter timings have a similar effect to increasing clock speed. There isn't much difference in cost between very low latancy DDR400 and very high clock speed DDR533.
