What are BIN and ISO files?

Does anyone know where I can find info and research about BIN and ISO files? I know you can burn them onto a CD, but I still don't really know the concept and why they are useful, and what the differences are, etc etc....

ISO files are standard CD images, refering to ISO 9660.

BIN files are annoying.
