The other day I was sitting down thinking of games gone by, and I started reminicing about all the FPS's I've enjoyed over the years, and well I wanted to see what other people were playing as well and what they enjoyed. Here is my list:

Top 3:
#1: Deus Ex
#2: Half Life
#3: Oblivion (may not be a shooter, but it is in FP perspective)

And now in no particular order, here are some of my all time favorites:

Tron 2.0
Morrowind (Spent countless hours playing this on the XBOX deployed...)
Doom (PC Series, not Doom 3)
Half Life 2
Quake 4
F.E.A.R.
Serious Sam
Serious Sam: The Second Encounter
Unreal Tournament Series
Return to Castle Wolfenstein
Star Wars: Republic Commando
Star Wars: Battlefront 1&2
Star Wars: Jedi Knight series
Mechwarrior series
Battlefield 2

XBOX

Halo series
COD4

N64:
Perfect Dark 64
Doom 64
Goldeneye
Turok 2

GC:
Timesplitters 2

Anyways, let me know what you guys think!

EDIT: Updated list thanks to forum posters jogging my memory!

If we're only talking about FPSs here, these are my picks:

1: Deus Ex
2: Descent 3
3: Unreal Tournament (the original)

Honorable mention goes to Unreal, Far Cry, Riddick: EFBB, Deus Ex Invisible War (despite all its problems, it's still one of the better FPSs I've played) and System Shock 2. I would also include the Splinter Cell series, especially the third game, but those are technically third person.

I haven't played any non-PC FPSs and can't comment there.

I've only bought 2 FPS games. 1st one was Duke Nukem 3D for PC when it 1st came out. Then I bought BioShock for PS3 a couple weeks ago after playing the demo. Not really into FPS.

I got Oblivion when I had a X360. Eh, not my cup of tea.

Yea I totally forgot about the Halo series on XBOX... people didn't like me very much playing on system link lol.

And the Mechwarrior series... man I totally love Mechwarrior! I even had the pleasure to play the first Mechwarrior when I was like 10 over at my friends house, and that was in First Person perspective.

I heard a lot of good things about the System Shock series, never played it though, wish I could. I remember getting SS2 for free from a website, endorsed and everything so it wasn't pirated, but it wouldn't work on my computer for some reason, kept crashing to desktop.

SS2 has several problems on modern systems, but there are patches and workarounds to address them. Right now, I think it can be made to work on both Nvidia and AMD cards, with only minor visual glitches.

Top 3? K, I'll bite.

3) Unreal Tournament '99
For pure fun per square inch, this game is rivaled in my personal gaming history only by the heaviest of heavy weights like StarCraft, Diablo II, and Counter Strike. It was frighteningly fresh at the time, and I've yet to see anyone, even Epic Games themselves, reproduce the magic in this title.

2) Deus Ex
The original Unreal engine sired some very special games. Deus Ex added a lot of things to shooters that were pilfered from the RPG genre and that shooters desperately needed. The game was so much richer because of little touches like an inventory system, nano-augs (essentially special skills), and hacking security systems to turn them against the enemy. No game really did it properly again until S.T.A.L.K.E.R. in 2007, and while Stalker is a fantastic title, it has its own demons in the form of a fairly cliched story and bugs aplenty that keep it from the same echelon of greatness.

1) Half-Life 2
What is there to say? Valve has perfected the original first person shooter template with this title. People level a lot of criticisms at what is arguably "hardcore" PC gaming's most revered franchise. They say that it's linear, that the graphics (even at the time of release) weren't top level, and on and on. So what. The beauty of Half-Life 2 was that it managed to be a string of set-pieces, "wow" moment after "wow" moment that kept itself feeling fresh, and kept building until the seismic finish. Valve's game mechanics were basic, but they wrapped this meat n' potatoes in a creatively realized dystopian future which felt, as Epic's CliffyB put it, more "crisp" than any game world that came before it. What Valve did here was what so many developers fail to do: They not only kept the "holy shit" factor going throughout the whole game, but it was constantly ratcheting upward, chapter after chapter. You could feel the game build, and it was a roller coaster ride (sometimes literally) the whole way. Pure, distilled amusement, as much as the format can possibly allow.

top 3:

1) Unreal Tournament (orig): best FPS ever, IMO. hands down.
2) CS: whichever version before bunny hopping got totally nerfed (1.5?)
3) Unreal (orig): what can i say, i love the originals. i remember having LAN party's with my friends back in the day playing through this game.

(not pc but) TimeSplitters 2: love this game. absolutely love it. multiplayer is great. a ton of game modes, a whole lot of unlockable chars. great assortment of weapons. map creator is well done and fun to play with. ctb is great with a bunch of friends.

Half Life 2 is a great game, don't get me wrong. I love it, but it just didn't make it to my top 3, but definelty would make my top 5.

I bought it when it was first released, and man the whole game is done just right. I literally felt I was playing in an over the top movie like Batman Begins. The entire post-apocolyptic enviroment is just about perfect!

And Tron 2.0... This game rocks. Its like the movie, only WAY better. A lot like Deus Ex in regards to upgrades, but a ton more action and less talky. If you can find it, definelty check it out!

5. Quake

(Omission of Quake III is because I never played it.)
