What does this message mean..

I'd say it's because someone else has it open but the path is local. Unless the word file is in a shared folder I dunno what's going on. If it's because someone else has it open you can just save it with a different filename and it should be fine.

If it's normal.dot, then I wouldn't worry about it too much. That's the normal document template, and as long as the actual working document saves, then it should be all right.

There are some (old) viruses out there that screw with normal.dot, too ... or modify normal.dot as their method of propogation.

Does this happen opening every word file? If so, with MS word closed, do a search for your "normal.dot" file and rename it to "normal.old". When you restart Word it will create a new normal.dot file to replace the corrupted old one. Should be fine after that. Done it a thousand times as a help desk tech.
