I just kept it as what it comes preformatted as, vfat I think? What's weird is Windows won't recognize any of these cards, but my cameras do, I was thinking maybe it's something to do with my machine but clearly not.

Actually I think vfat has limit of 2GB and I just found a few files bigger than that. I wonder if that's the issue, but it's weird it would do IO errors I would expect something a big more graceful, like that one file failing and then it continuing with the rest. But why would it work fine with the other SD cards. Testing with dd to see if I can create a very large file on the SD cards that worked.

Just checked, it's fat32... I saw vfat somewhere but may have been when I was trying to format it.

The smaller SD cards have no IO errors even going beyond 2GB. No IO errors. Tried with the new ones, massive IO errors with dd. So messed up. They're all same file system.

Doesn't recognize it, I assume the wine emulation doesn't give access to hardware. I posted in storage section, this has be stumped. I thought I just had bad SD cards but no way 5 of them in a row are bad.

Windows won't even recognize the cards. I don't see how formatting it will do anything anyway, even a simple dd is failing. But for some reason formatting it with my cameras work, and I can take pictures/video and copy that to my PC, but as soon as I copy files to the SD cards that's when it fails, and it's only with the new ones.

Rufus in Windows won't detect it, as windows doesn't. It just says to insert media, it sees the reader but not the card.

Had the reader for a while, is there some different tech in cards that has changed that requires a different reader, I thought it was fairly universal.

Well it has to support sdxc since newer bigger capacity ones are all sdxc or sdhc

Look at the chipset info in device manager and look up the spec. It would explain windows not seeing it.

Weird that it would work fine in the camera though, the camera is older than the reader. But guess I can try to get a different reader to see if it helps.

Or just leave in the camera and copy files to the camera through usb.

I have a usb sdcard adapter and that always works.

That's what I'm using is a USB reader. Tried with camera but it shows up as a special camera device and not a regular file system, I get a folder where I could copy pictures but it doesn't let me mount it like a normal file system and I can't write to it.

This is just the weirdest thing, doesn't make sense.

Are these the largest capacity cards you’ve used with your computer? They may be too big.

Windows won't even see the card so no windows based formatting tools will work. It just sees the card reader as an empty drive. And yeah this is probably the biggest cards I've tried to use. The other ones I have are 64GB and they work fine.

In Linux it sees the card but starts to generate IO errors after a while if I try to write to it. Reading from the card seems fine, and they work in the cameras. Starting to wonder if these are somehow specifically designed for video/photos and don't do well with raw files, but can't see how it would know the difference, data is data.

Did you check disk management? Sometimes it needs to be assigned drive letter first
Windows doesn't detect it. It sees the card reader but it sees it as empty. Just says to insert a disk. Ex: it sees it the same way as a floppy drive that has no floppy in it.

I looked up the data sheet for the chip inside of it and did find this though:

Secure DigitalTM and MultiMediaCardTM
- Supports SD specification v1.0 / v1.1 / v2.0/ SDHC (Up to 32GB)
- Compatible with SDXC (Up to 2TB)
- Supports MMC specification v3.X / v4.0 / v4.1 / v4.2.
- x1 / x4 / x8 data transmission. (For QFN24 up to x4)
- Automatic CRC7 generation for command and CRC7 verification for response on CMD
- Support automatic CRC16 generation and verification on DAT0:7
- In addition to full packet transaction, optional single byte / bit operation on both CMD and DAT line /
lines
- Process data in block or byte

I wonder if I am hitting the 1st limit somehow, even though the card does say SDXC on it so it should be falling under that.

I made a thread in the right forum and nobody is going to it lol.

I ended up ordering 3 different USB readers from Amazon just to rule out the reader being an issue. Will see when they come in.

Don't order garbage from Amazon. There's your problem. Will it cost a bit more to either get it from a brick and mortar store, or a reliable source? Sure. But it's worth it.

I don't order electronics from Amazon anymore. It's either B&H online, or best buy in person. Yes I know you're in Canada so the stores will differ. But Amazon is just a cesspool of shit now.
