Here is a reminder what BF2 looked like (note the 'fog'), to support 64 players.
DICE has decided people would rather destruction, and see further, like, this, than have more players.

I think the fog was more about the tech at the time, as you aways saw that whether it was 64 or 32 players.

And that concept of Karkand is strange. I remember a map with a mosque (good times), but this is Karkand. EDIT: The mosque was in Mashturr City.

Unless the map is massive, I don't see the need for 32v32. Hell, 9 vs 9 is a lot when i'm playing in Black Ops. Everytime you spawn, someone is right there next to you shooting you.

That is absurd. What is 32 vs 32 going to be like? you spawn right into someone's crosshair?

lol Most of Black Ops maps are about the size of the starting spawn in BF for one side. Even on 32v32 in BF2 you still spent a significant amount of time looking for people. If you were on foot it took forever.

well no shit...because 32 vs 32 sucks ass

to house that many people the maps have to be huge. who wants to spend half the game walking/running to where the action is only to get sniped by the other team and have to do it all over again?

Sorry if I'm late to this thread, and I'm also sorry if this has already been said, but... if you've played Battlefield before, you don't HAVE to spawn at the end of the map. Spawn on one of your squad members (assuming your squad doesn't suck and you don't all get killed at once).

Battlefield 3 will have 32 vs 32 servers.

the fog on most bf2 maps was to prevent sniping. On wake island(only 0 fog map) 64 man infantry only, i could make 500m shots from south village to north village. If the enemy didnt move after the first hit my follow up shot would kill them. On any of the mec maps if you didnt have fog then every cheezy camper would snipe/camp from the hills.

For the cod whelps who never played bf2, there is generally less spawn/run/die in BF because medics can revive downed players with the defib paddles. Add the squad respawn and no turtle camping position is safe. This makes winning less about killing and more about teamwork and map control.

There's no penalty for losing a cp in cod because you can spawn anywhere(even behind an enemy). With spawning linked to cp control in BF, it means you always have a good idea of where the front lines are and there is less chance of someone popping up behind you. The downside is you have to run to the front lines if your team hasnt capped a good cp or you arent playing in a squad.

I've played both bf and cod, and the main difference is teamwork. BF incentivizes working with others, cod tends to reward solo play.

I remember playing Tribes 2 64 v 64 - 'spammy' doesn't really explain it fully. There were also the ~200 player battles in the Planetside beta that used to crop up every now and again, which were fairly epic, but technology at the time really couldn't handle it so it was pretty much a laggy mess.

Personally, I prefer my servers with 16 players or less, depending on the game.

better than that gay as fuck gameplay as they call it in the MW CoD series and the new MOH.. absolute trash..
someone needs to learn to push technology or we gonna be stuck with COD 10000000 and no innovations.

I'm glad you don't make games.

32v32 on BF2 had some of the most epic battles ever. That many people trying to get one point on a map was awesome.

+1 32 vs 32 on BF2 was pretty damn fun IMHO. There were tons of moments where you felt part of a team in a actual battle. I believe the trend toward smaller maps started with COD4 and frankly I hated COD4 with its small grenade launcher spammed maps.

Edit: Tribes 1 and 2 were also tons of fun when you had large maps and battles were raging back and fourth across the maps. Personally I like conquest/capture and hold maps with online fps.

red orchestra 2: heroes of stalingrad will have 32 v 32 and people with beastly servers will of course push it higher than that

Seriously, when I looked at Delta Force Xtreme 2 I was amazed that they're still using a 10 year old engine. The thing is I don't really get why it went to shit for them. I was under the impression that Joint Ops was a commercial success, so they surely had enough money for a sequel.
I bought Joint Ops in 2004 and it was great. My friend and I played it in 2007 but by then it was ruined by cheaters which were always there but especially after Nova like stopped paying/dropped PB or something. 150 players?! Even like 1/2 that was fun on smaller maps.

Yeah JO I think sold decently, plus their other "recent" releases like DFX2 was so lazy it must have cost $10,000 to develop so even a few copies sold made them money.

I think the company is just retarded or mismanaged. Their next game (Delta Force Angel Falls) was supposed to be out like 2 years ago. For the next couple of years, we'd check in for updates outside of the few screenshots on the webpage.

ZERO news. Zero info in the forums. For years. Basically they're making people give up on the game. How horribly ran can the company be that you can't have a single employee spend 10 minutes to give an update?

By now they're probably bankrupt or something. They've had no major releases in many years.

Keep an eye on BF3 and definitely Red Orchestra 2

http://www.pcgamer.com/2011/01/11/red-orchestra-2-heroes-of-stalingrad-preview/

"PC shooter fans have come to expect less than we have in the past,” says Gibson. “It’s kind of sad—there’re either no mod tools or all these strange restrictions. So, in a way, players have higher expectations for polish, but lower expectations for feature sets. They aren’t bad games—they’re not. All these games that are being developed right now are great achievements for a console, but they’re not pushing what’s possible on the PC.”

I don't so much miss the large maps what I miss the most is LAN play and VEHICLES. I'm so sick of strictly run and gun.
