Like others have stated, and we have gone over here a dozen times, location matters a lot. National average for median is about 59k? Well here it is only 33k. Family of 5. 19 in college, 14, 5, 1, and wife. Little over 160k, or about 5x the median income. Living in LA, NY, Boston, DC, I would be dead broke. But here living is pretty good. Big house, and we do ok. Wife stays at home. According to the chart, we are barely upper income. Yet that is based on the national average, which is almost twice what it is here.

Red, for fast food, avoid soda. They charge too much for it

Sometimes it's actually cheaper to take the combo than the stuff separately, though I'd have to start paying more attention to that. I don't actually WANT the pop, I just take and drink it because it comes with the combo, but if asking for the two meal items separately is cheaper I can start doing that. Really depends on the place/combo I think. Would need to start paying more attention. But idealy I just need to stop eating so much of it in first place.

Our county's median household income is $97k. Yet we have people struggling at paycheck to paycheck because of expenses. Says a lot about the validity or meaning of this chart.

I'm not really sure why they factored in household size. How many children you have doesn't affect 'middle' vs 'upper' income (unless you're having them work in a factory at age 8 or something) it just affects how it feels and is used. Those numbers seem a bit off too. $22,924 for a kid? Department of agriculture says it costs $14,000 annually. UNICEF says $16,200. Sounds like more Pro-Spawner propaganda to me
Median family income increases with family size. Part of that has to do with having more earners in a household ( not just adults with jobs but also teens) part of that has to do with people in their prime earning years tending to have had children already (for example a 25 year old with an entry job and no kids vs that same person at 45 with a couple)

hah no way would $150k for a family of 4 be upper income in NJ. That's squarely in middle income in this area. I'd say upper income in NJ is 300k+ for family of 4

GF and I are apparently a few times upper income for a family of 2. Housing is expensive as hell here ... our mortgage guy last year said he would approve us up to a million bucks, which we laughed at but it's not that far off anymore even six months later. Everything on Zillow is $800k+ now. Luckily we found a place last fall that's looking like a fairly solid investment.

I don't see "I buy shampoo from 99 cent store", therefore I'm not voting.

You BUY shampoo!?!?!? You must be loaded, so that would fall under ATOT millionaire.

I learned that you can ask for more shampoo while I was staying at a motel. They'll bring you a whole bag full of shampoo bottles, which lasted me a year.

We are not talking about your ejaculated sperm count

It's funny to see people here get so upset when some poster admits they have money, and other (poorer) posters get all bent out of shape.

Do you people think it is a moral failing to be poor? Or that all rich people are highly intelligent and successful?

I have some news for you: Some people are simply born rich. They couldn't be poor if they wanted to. I happen to be one of those people.

I'm very sorry the rest of you had to give up so much blood and sweat and tears working in your various menial jobs for decades to earn your paltry fortunes but that doesn't give you the right to think you're somehow better than me (or anybody else).

I live in the bay area CA. My wife and I make around 190 combined. We have two young children and a town home. We are doing alright but not saving much..... child care and private school are a huge expense, but the school districts arent great where we live so we opted to pay for private school.

We get by and have a fairly decent standard of living. Eat well, go out to eat occasionally, sign our kids up for recreational activities, and take annual vacations. We could cut WAAAY back if we had to.... I was dirt poor when I was growing up. I have a fantastic life compared to that.

People need perspective.
