What is pi?
Pi is the sixteenth letter of the Greek alphabet and represents the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter. It's mathematical value can be calculated to an infinite amount of digits with no patterns, however most people simply represent the number 3.1416 with pi.

If you're wondering why I'm asking, I am doing a project on Numbers Occuring in Nature and am doing two posters (one on pi, one on e) and then a report on Fibonacci Numbers. Whee, all last minute, sounds like fun

Take a look at the current research into the normality of pi, there is a short article in the current Scientific American about it. In short some researchers have found a way to calculate digits of pi or log 2 without having to know any of the preceding digits. Previously this was assumed to be impossible.

Thanks, I looked at the Scientific American site but I couldn't find the article you were talking about. I'll mention it on the poster though. Thanks

Anyone got any good pi links? Google brings up the dullest results.

Pi is the sixteenth letter of the Greek Alphabet ?p,? and represents the ration between a circle?s circumference and its diameter. The number pi is an irrational number and occurs in nature. Pi can be calculated to an infinite amount of digits but the value 3.14 is most often associated as the value of pi.

I added in the occuring in nature and irrational number stuff. I have to take up space.

Pie comes in about 3,000 flavors, from key lime to apple to lemon merangue (sp?) to chocolate to peach cobbler to blueberry to, well, virtually everything imaginable. Choosing a favorite is always hard.

my pre-cal teacher went to Georgia Tech. the cheer they did at the basketball games was similar. "sine, cosine, tangent, pi, 3.14159, go yellow jackets!"

PI is irrational due to its use in calculating a non existant. A circle cannot exist... All activity in nature abhors it and always seeks the tangent... because of this attitude a circle cannot be.. as indicated by the absence of the final digit to define a true circle... Tell your Calc Prof that Zero cubed can equal One... Then change majors to something more reasonable like Economics where everything relies on circular motion and reasoning..
