I just received my new Ugate 3200P Cable/DSL router and was reading some stuff off the box and it says it supports PPPoE. I have no clue what it is. Anyone know?
PPPoE, as imhotepmp noted, is Point to Point Protocal over Ethernet.
Typically, alot of DSL providers use it. Is uses software like WinPoet or RASpoet to log you on and supply an IP address when you use DSL. Your router gives you the ability to store this PPPoE logon info internally eliminating the need to use this horrible software to use DSL.
WinPoet ( www.WindRiver.com ) is a brand name (version) of PPPoE software. RASPPPoE is just another version of PPPoE software. PPPoE is essentially dial up software for dsl.
All this PPoE and PPoA is lame, XDSL started out as a allways on connection and now the providers want you to use silly little "dial up" applets every time you want use internet.
PPPoE tries to be real DSL but it fails so miserably its not even funny.
I have an advertised 640K line but I only get 480k.
Well its also verizon so...
Raspppoe is a more stable protocol. Less problems than the WinPoet software and no conflicts ( too many problems w/Win2K ). I'm using Verizon and switched to it about 6 months ago, and could not be happier. Highly recommended....
PPPoE is suck. However, switching from that awful WinPoet crap to RASPPPoE has made my Verizon DSL connection perform better. It also get 480K-495K out of my 640K service. :|
