1. winpoet 2.0 = suck
2. raspppoe = better, but still annoying
3. dsl router = bliss
PPPoE is a scheme by dsl isps which allows them to sign up more people than they have actual ip's for. When you want to use your "always on" dsl, you need to connect to their service and they'll temporarily assign you an ip from a pool of addresses. When you log off, the ip gets thrown back in the pool for someone else to use.
The advantage of a dsl router is that you set up the router via telnet or a web browser and it takes care of making the connection as soon as you access the internet. You don't need any extra software or protocols. Best of all, any computer you plug into your router using dhcp will simply work. It's a beautiful thing.
