wait wait wait
you mean to tell me, those entire growths of fur, are ENTIRELY made up of whatever the fuck those false-spiders are called?

any means of turning that entire cavern into a sterile environment will do. just so long as it gets done.
edit: I thought so. They are called Harvestmen.

I never really saw them much growing up, but I've been seeing them frequently near/at work.

We always used the term daddy long legs for an entirely different creature, typically the Cellar Spider.

Having seen harvestmen quite frequently as of late, I can definitely see how many come to call it the daddy long legs.
But it's not even a spider, or at least, not a "true spider." It's an entirely different Order (Opiliones) than the true spiders (Order: Araneae). Just looking at the body structure alone is enough to see they don't really look like spiders, once you get past the concept of them having eight legs.

Apparently, that species (and at least a few others that are found in the same sub-order), may group together like that often, with as many as 70,000 individuals comprising the group!
jesus I never want to see that. They can't bite us, aren't venomous at all, and generally aren't bothersome, but they're creepy as shit. Seeing 70,000 of the fuckers in a furry-looking ball that wiggles and writhes? GAH fuck no

Wow. Of the Spiderlike critters, Daddy Longlegs have never bothered me, but seeing a group like that would be freaky.

Imagine if someone saw that and decided to stroke it with their hand thinking it was a plant. The shock would probably give me a heart attack.

"Zoom! Enhance!" said I.

This pic made me think "arthropod legs," but I also wasn't expecting them to be ok with just having the ends of their legs hanging up in the air like that. Most bugs and critters like that seem to get a bit edgy when they've got legs not firmly planted on something.
So I went with the "tree roots" thing. :\

I guess when they're all jammed together like that, they don't care so much about foot-ground contact.

Thinking it was a plant or something - I most certainly would not stroke it. First thought would be fungus or something - and who the hell strokes a random fungus?

lol

I guess I'm too much of a wimp with strange plant life, as I know very little about the various oddities out there. Fungus? Is it poisonous? Give me an infection? Turn me into a zombie?

I tend to live the primal way of life: Do I know what it is? No. Does it remind me of something that I heard killed Orghk three moons ago? Yes. Me no touch.

Ding ding ding!

Yep, they're daddy long legs! Lots and lots of daddy long legs. While not technically spiders, they're spiders.

I was going to say "harvestmen" (because, to some people "daddy long legs" refers to another species that actually *is* a spider).

Only spider webs bother me, not spiders themselves. Provided those things don't even make spider webs, I'd totally try to pickup as many of them as I can so they start crawling all over my arm. Would be the most hilarious feeling.

They are considered poisonous though, but their teeth are not long enough to go through your skin, if they even could get a bite in. Their mouths are also not big enough to grab a chunk of your skin. Just don't eat them.

Didn't the myth busters prove they are not really that deadly even if they were able to bite?

Granted those look different then the ones we call daddy long legs around here but I believe they are all about the same.

They are not poisonous. They also aren't venomous; all species in that Order have zero venom glands.
They still can't even penetrate our skin, but even if they could, it wouldn't bother us.

The true spider known as daddy long legs, the cellar spider, is also almost certainly not venomous enough to bother humans - however, it is not exactly a thoroughly studied species.

The Mythbusters were testing with those basement spiders, which actually are spiders. Everyone around here calls the harvestman "daddy long legs," so I think that was one of the most flawed tests ever.

Kinda like the time they concluded that CDs do not explode in computer disc drives (I've had it happen multiple times).

Why would anyone want to kill daddy long legs, they're so cute. That said, when I was a kid, we use to catch them and pull their legs off one-by-one. LOL.

We used to catch a fly, slam it on a table (knocks 'em out) then get a long piece of hair and tie a loose knot and slip it around the fly's head, then take a piece of gum and stick it to the table with the other end of the hair in it. When the fly wakes up it just flies around in a circle above the table, this was fun in school!..
