What is the real world difference?

I am going to set up an SLI on my new rig I am building. I have narrowed it down too two cards. The evga Geforce 7800GT CO and the evga Geforce 7800GTX 256. I know the GT only has 20 pipes vs 24 with GTX. But the clock speed is only 20mhz difference and the mem speed is not much different either. Yet there is a 100 or so dollar difference in price.

Since they are so close in specs is there going to be a HUGE difference between the two? I mean 20mhz that isnt much. 4 more pipes, that isnt much difference either.

I am also going to be watching the CeBit announcement this week on the new cards but if the new gtx is not going to come out on the market til June or so I am not going to wait.

I hope someone can tell me what the real difference I would see between these two cards and if the extra money is going to be worth it. Im not worried so much about the price but with the specs so close I think the price difference is rediculous.

Well that all depends on your resolutions, but I would take it that you are either doing some crazy 3d projects or running high rezzes for the GTX's.

If you are running for games and you are only going to use a 1280x1024 setting, then I'm pretty sure you should save the moolah and just get the dual GT's; especially the eVGA CO's. BTW: What GTX model are you talking about, because the fastest model I could find was the 256-P2-N527-AX clocked at 470 engine and 1200 memory (that's not counting the KO version or the obvious 512mb version). Keep in mind the GT CO runs at 470 engine and 1100 memory--not much difference.

Basically, IMO, save money on the GT's UNLESS you are planning on using a resolution of 1600x1200 or higher...that's when the GTX's start to take over.

i basically looked on newegg and the highest priced evga gtx card is only 490mhz vs the 470mhz for the gt oc. I will be running dual LCD monitors probably 21". mostly photoshop and video editing, but will use for gaming.

From what I have read, the evga cards are the best plus have lifetime warranty. I read on another post a few minutes ago about evga having a trade up program. I need to investigate that too.

I will vouch, EVGA is the best. I only buy through them, because their warranty covers overclocking and putting on aftermarket coolers. You can basically run over your videocard with your car and they will keep it warrantied. Before buying a 7800GT or 7800GTX, why don't you wait a few days and buy a EVGA 7900GT, which will only cost ya $299 and it will have 24 pixel pipelines. Or you can even invest in a 7900GTX, but if I were you, I would wait a few days and see how the 7900's are, and prices will probably drop too mate.

thanks Eur: I was going to wait til this weekend to see what happens. So if that is the case then do you think the new GT will be better than the old GTX or they will be pretty much the same? From what I have read, the new 7900 GTX aka g80 wont be out til at least June. If that is the case then my choices will be new 7900 GT or 7800 GTX.

I hate decisions like this.

I really think the 7900GT will be the best bang for the buck. I mean think about it mate, you can SLI them for just $600. I honestly think for the difference in price, I would get a 7900GT if I was you. Now with me, since I already have a couple pairs of GTX's, I probably won't upgrade until the new DX10 GPU comes out by Nvidia. In your case, I would probably spend $600 for a couple 7900GT's and run them in SLI mode. That's only $150 more then ONE 7800GTX 256MB.

I am in Europe, so my dollar amounts are just approximations. I know the 7900GT will only be $299 in US currencies though.

Hope that helps you a bit more mate. All in all, I think the 7900GT will perform as good as a 7800GTX 256MB. I also hear rumors that the new 7900's have 2 ALU's per pipeline, which would also give it better performance over the 7800 series.

Looks like a updated heatsink and fan thats on my two EVGA 7800GTX 512MB's. So far I'm not impressed, hopefully my mind will be changed when it's released. Now the 7900GT is a great value, so that does indeed impress me.

so the new gtx is going to be a double wide card in its standard form? The gtx 256 now is only single wide. if all these new cards are going to end up being double wide its going to hurt alot of people. If the new gtx is double wide, I wont be getting that since I cant have two double wide cards in my rig. I have a capture card and an audio card in there so there wouldnt be any room for air flow.......................thats just BS.

Just to let you know the 7900GTX is the G71. The G80 is suppost to come out much later this year and has a unified architechture.

With that out of the way, which cards do you want? Do you have the money? I would say wait since the 7900's are coming out in a few days anyway (or a week).

thanks wizboy, I guess I miss read the info on the gtx being the g71. At any rate to answer your question as to what I want. I want the fastest Nvidia card available that is single wide. If they are going to have a single wide 7900 gtx then that may be what I get.

Well the 7900GTX has a double wide cooler so I guess thats out of the question. I'm not really sure how much faster the 7900GT is over the current 7800GTX, but I would say to wait it out for the 7900GT.

Im telling you mate, wait and grab a 7900GT for only $299, you will gain 24 pixel pipelines from this card and if rumors are true, it will have 2 ALU's for every pipeline. Which will mean 48 pixel shaders all in all, but those are just rumors, but for $299, getting 24 pixel pipelines aint bad at all mate. Even better, spend $600 for 2 7900GT's in SLI, that seems like the best option for you mate.

I agree the 7900GT seems to be the best choice. Benchmarks and test have shown that the 7900GT performs just slightly better than a 7800GTX. The card itself doesn't look like much with its tiny heatsink, but plenty of horse power. I heard that its supposed to be less of a power hog also. I saw it on Newegg from $319 - $360 for the EVGA cards.
