It helps to consider what you are trying to do which is not modify the drivers, but the setup -so that it detects the expected A2. So, point ctomp.exe to the top directory of the expanded package where the setup files exist (specifically data1.hdr and data1.cab).

Could you go into more detail about hwo to remove these items?

Start -> Run -> msconfig, open Startup tab, de-select the items. Upon next restart you will be prompted to make a choice of whether or not to accept the altered startup. I do not recall the wording exactly but you want to accept and disable further notification.

Note Msconfig is not included with Windows 2000 but the one from XP can be used and is available for download.

The other way is to run RegCleaner, open Startup List tab, select the items, click the Remove Selected button. Afterwards, these will be available on the Backups tab should you wish to restore them. RegCleaner is also a safe and easy way to remove all Creative Tech registry entries after uninstalling the original software and it includes a cleanup tool to handle the less obvious too.

thanks broohaahaa.. it was self extracting in my doc and settings folder.

anyways, i now lost my advanced EQ!! damn creative. no more creative for me. those cheating bastards. i mean if you could make your LIVE and A1 card sound like a A2 just through drivers alone, you KNOW they are being cheats. i mean if they offered these free drivers, then everyone would win except creative, with their loss revenue through making new and "better" cards.

Umm...the easiest way to disable the startup screen (audigy 1) resides in this site's FAQ.
No, it does not involve moving some avi file.
click start, click creative, click eax. Click the little context looking button (the only button)
uncheck "load on startup" again the only option.
NOT THAT HARD!

Creative products are not all bad. I admit I have had some problems but I barely notic any loss of sound range when using creative products, and it is always possible if you have a decent speaker setup to boost the bass and compensate for the software problems. I often wonder if Creative is hiding in some other application the true control over the sound and the mixer. If I were to run some backwater movie making program it would unlock the secret mixer that actually controlled volume on my creative card. I try contacting creative's tech support and I realize that was pointless and it did one good thing, it brought me closer to anandtech.

Upon reading what I wrote again I realize a semantic mistake: 'taint that the modified setup detects the expected A2 but that the card it detects is a valid one to install for. Anyhoo...

Rather than running the update package to extract it, it is easier to use WinRAR or the like so that you have control over the destination.

Let's not get carried away. The Live! cannot be made to be as good as an Audigy because of the slower version of the DSP and more limited peripheral chips and such. They certainly "cheated" on the A2 versus A1 though as far as pricing versus actual differential cost of essentiallly just a better DAC and additional connector and new software. But hey, the market will bear what it will bear and as long as we realize and are able to equalize things a bit with hacks all is good. The price of the ZS is 2/3 that of the A2 and the LS is only something like 1/3 the price of the original and better too (give or take for lack of FireWire).

The big benefit for me of the new drivers is no pop when I turn the computer on and off.:music:

monsoons kix ass. i myself have the monsoon MM-700.

I love my planar media 14s, best PC speakers I've ever heard.

Yep, I removed all of the things in msconfig from the startup, that I undrstood but doing that does not get rid of the damn slash screen that loads on boot. Also, I think leaving CTSysVol enabeled is great because it gives you the sound adjustment tool at the bottom which does a better job than the basic winxp one.

EDIT: I am a complete idiot, the option is right there. Creative -> Audigy 2 -> Splash Screen.

I completely missed it before.

Yes, and AIWGuru described it also. I did not suggest to remove CTSysVol. Personally, I do use it but it is just a tray shortcut to the same Surround Mixer found in the Creative folder so if you never had reason to adjust anything after doing so initially it could safely be removed.
