Why don't they mean "anything?" The server seems capable of maxing out pretty much any connection people can get at home so... it shows you how close to spec you actually are, and that is something.

BTW... mine's 508 KB/s

False. I am on a university connection that maxes out at 10 Mbps (1.25 MBps - which I have attained multiple times). I downloaded from that server at 3XX KBps. The test is not a reliable indicator of connection speed. No single test ever will be.
