What makes an overclock count?

I recently was experimenting with my i7 3820 I tried a 4.6Ghz overclock with turbo off I scored a lower score on vantage as opposed to when I overclocked my CPU to 5.035Ghz so does turbo on make an overclock valid or does it off make it a legit overclock

I would like to hear your thoughts on this

Both are legit provided that they are 100% stable at the speed you run them at.

I've always been under the understanding that you should overclock your turbo speed.

Yeah I ran prime95 for 12 hrs @ 5.035ghz no bsod passed the intel burn test so overall pretty impressed with the i7 3820

yeah, its pretty funny the number of people who regard the 3820 as a chip that isn't good for overclocking just because it isn't a K chip

I thought all the non-K chips were locked down.

Sandy Bridge E has BCLK straps that allow for a lot more overclocking outside of the multiplier (which is still pretty flexible on the locked down chips thanks to turbo)

for instance, simply bumping the BCLK to the first strap of 125MHz x 36 (the stock multiplier on the 3820) = a relatively easy 4.5GHz.

For those who live near a Microcenter, the i7 3820 is actually a very good deal @ $229.99

Most CPUs at microcenter are very good deals.

Thanks for the info.

Temps are not that bad once the voltage is upped like every CPU your bound to run into heat issues. I meant stock voltage at 4.3ghz is pretty good for 3820

Jeez I wish my 3930k went up that far. Takes 1.375 V to get to 4.5 and 4.4 is 1.32V. The next step is well above 1.4 in the danger territory.

Most CPUs at microcenter are very good deals.

was merely pointing it out as an exceptional deal ever since MC has sort of started backing off on their CPU discounts with Sandy, for instance the 3770K is still $289.99 @ MC (only $40 less than newegg - which isn't much of a discount from what they used to offer, say with the Q6600/9550 or first gen i7s).

while the 3820 is $229 vs. $299, $70 less

granted, X79 motherboards are more expensive, and there aren't exactly any "cheap" X79 boards, so even with a motherboard deal if we compare say i7 3770K + P8Z77-V PRO = $449.98 vs. i7 3820 + P9X79 = $439.98, so only $10 cheaper if we go with comparable boards

but still, not bad for the basis of a new platform that should be ready for IvyBridge-E next year, and I think we'd see more enthusiasts choose that route if they had the option

Does that work with the Ivy i3s as well? :sneaky:

And now I'm wondering which boards have BCLK adjustment?

Edit: Oh, SB-E, not IB.

Then . . . would the SB-E find better performance gains with RAM speeds at 2133 or above?

I thought the multi-strap features was also implemented in Ivy Bridge. So I'm wrong about this?

Edit: answered my own question via Google

Imagine that.

It seems that when I did my research and ended up with my CPU and OC'd it I missed out on the part where I need to down clock memory in order to increase strap. So leaving memory as is I was crashing no matter what I did. I'll have to revisit my OC and see if I can get more out of her

I've been losing out on ~.3 ghz for half a year now shame on me!
