What monitor to get?

I am looking to upgrade my 17" crt to something better. Right now I am running it a 800x600 because anything bigger makes text too small. I have a 9800se softmodded video card.

Since I have poor vision, I need a monitor that's big, easy on the eyes, and something that won't ruin my vision even more. I also like to play FPS games so game performance is important to me too.

Thanks

What's your price range? If lower, you could go for a nice 19" crt. LCDs are supposed to be easier on the eyes though, so maybe you should consider an 18 - 20". The dell 2001fp, a 20" model can be had for about 600 - 650 depending on tax and coupons.

Get a nice shadow mask like the viewsonic G90F and you'll get superior image quality than an lcd will give you and no worrying about native resolution. Shadows mask are easy on the eyes too. Check out dells sale on monitors 15% off now and free shipping. Think it end tonight though.

Thanks. What's a shadow mask, and will I be able to run those big monitors at low resolutions?

2 different kinds of crt monitors: shadowmask and aperture grille. Sony trinitrons are aperture grille. Shadow mask is the original design crt. Aperture grille is generally best for graphics and color and shadow mask for text sharpness. The monitors will all do low resolutions just fine. I use 800x600 also. The more expensive the monitor the more features and higher resolutions generally. I have a aperture grille and its text sharpness is unparalleled (mitsubishi dp930). With your sight it would be best to judge them in person but thats hard to do these days with most walkin places selling bottom of line-barely mid line monitors. Dell is an excellent place to get monitors due to their free shipping, no hassle return policy and they have the special also which Reck said. It just depends on how much you want to spend. The price right now on the 930 is very low for that monitor 271 bucks. In general you get what you pay for as said earlier feature wise and screen quality.

BTW, that Samsung 997df is also at Best Buy for $200 + tax. Same price, but should make for quicker and cheaper returns or replacements. Plus, you can see it in the store, though that may not do you much good if it's running that stupid Best Buy program. Maybe you can ask an employee to disable it so you can check it out at 8x6.

I'm using a sony SDM-X73 17" moniter, it can do up to 1280x1024 and it is wonderful with 2 analog inputs, 1 digital, and it doesnt great with text (that is an understatement!) and it also does great with games (16 ms response time) and movies....its colors are very true, and its viewing angles are great, almost no contrast problems as you move around....it has built in speakers which are mediocre, but I prefer my logitech speakers....it costs $440, so it isnt cheap...newegg link: http://www.newegg.com/app/View...=24-006-052&depa=1

I'd caution you against samsungs...they dont do so hot with text...

The NEC 930SB @ ~$295 (tax) @ Dell is $20 cheaper than Amazon @ $315 (for me). I got a Samsung 997DF for under $200 @ BestBuy a few months ago and am satisfied with it. It replaces a 4 year old NEC FE950 which has a horizontal hold problem (picture goes black as image compresses to a thin horizontal white line across the middle of the monitor) that reviewers at Amazon complain about with another NEC monitor. So the question for me is get another Samsung 997DF or spend about $100 more for the NEC 930SB? Got a few hours to mull it over.

go NEC by all means. text clarity is there with quality aparture grilles, but shadowmasks can never match the gorgeous colors of AG.
